10º CINEFANTASY

The CINEFANTASY - FANTASTIC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL with the aim of encouraging, discussing and transmitting the fantastic genre of films and their universe.

A genre that has the creative potential that allows exploration in unknown and unique territories, promotes imagination and also presents current and necessary topics.

In the last 9 editions, we presented 927 films, 53 creative workshops, 3,308 registered films and attracted more than 20 thousand people who participated in the festival.

In our last edition, our free media exhibitor was valued at R $ 12.7 million and impacted more than 15.8 million people.

Cinefantasy is a founding member of FANTLATAM - LATIN AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF FANTASTIC CINEMA FESTIVES, which is a federation of festivals in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama and Uruguay. Promotes exchange, cooperation and sharing between festivals.

The 10th CINEFANTASY, held in São Paulo from September 8 to 13, included a schedule scheduled for educational activities and also nominated competing films and other exhibitions. All categories of the competition received the JOSÉ MOJICA MARINS trophy on the closing night.

The dissemination, inclusion and democratization of the admission process has been our policy since 2008 to promote CINEFANTASY, with two special programs; "CINEFANTASY ESQUENTA" and "CINEFANTASY CIRCULA". "ESQUENTA CINEFANTASY" is a meeting held on the outskirts of São Paulo and which presents a version of the director with comments. And also "CIRCULA CINEFANTASY", mobile exhibitions of previous editions of films, further expanding its audience.

Dublin Feminist Film Festival 2018

Dublin Feminist Film Festival has established firm roots on Dublin’s cultural calendar, shining a spotlight on women in film. DFFF promotes and celebrates female filmmakers, hoping to inspire and empower others to get involved in filmmaking.

This involves considering women on-screen, but also behind the camera, through the dual-aspect of celebrating and showcasing fantastic female filmmaking, as well as demonstrating that women make compelling and complex characters and subjects.  DFFF is a celebratory couple of days and our commitment to inclusive art is reflected in the programme each year, showcasing a range of work, from documentary to drama, short form to feature, films from different places and representing different perspectives, as well as work by women-of-colour.

ABOUT 2018'S FESTIVAL

The theme for #DFFF2018 is REFRAME/REFOCUS. Rather than foreground particular topics, our programme this year will feature films not only directed by women, but also shot by female cinematographers. In emphasising the role of the cinematographer, we aim to expand the notion of who 'makes' a film and what 'Films by Women' means, while also raising questions about whether and how films shot by women feature a different or other gaze.

WHY CINEMATOGRAPHY?

In 2018 something remarkable happened: Rachel Morrison garnered an Academy Award nomination for Cinematography for her work on the film Mudbound. At first glance, this might not seem so out of the ordinary. Over the last four decades, women have regularly and increasingly been nominated for and won international awards for production roles that had previously been male-only domains. Not so with cinematography, however. Morrison was the first woman ever to be nominated for her work behind the camera in ninety years of Oscars! Awards aren’t everything of course. But historically speaking, cinematography has been the most difficult filmmaking role for women to break into.

And yet for the past several years, some of the most visually exciting films in world cinema have been shot by women. Long-standing talents like Ellen Kuras, Agnés Godard, Caroline Champetier, and Mandy Walker have in recent years been joined by a huge influx of international cinematographers like Quyen Tran, Nanu Segal, Reed Morano, Morrison, and many more.

For the Fifth Dublin Feminist Film Festival, we have decided to highlight the role of the female cinematographer. In coming to this decision, we thought about it from several different angles. Does a woman’s camera “see” differently? If much of what makes film so compelling is the visual, can a film be “by” its cinematographer as much as its director? And institutionally and structurally speaking, why has the field of cinematography in particular been so reluctant to accept women into its ranks?

Thus we present REFRAME/REFOCUS, wherein we hope to reconsider, not simply the role of the cinematographer in general, but very specifically the role of the female cinematographer and how she lights, frames, and moves through the onscreen space that constitutes our visual filmic experience.

To that end, all the films we screen this year – features and shorts – were directed and shot by women. As part of the festival, we’re also featuring a talk by an esteemed academic on female cinematography, and a roundtable discussion with two Dublin-based female cinematographers.

It’s important to celebrate the work of Rachel Morrison, and we heartily congratulate her on her achievement. However, as we continue to reconsider the fantastic work that female cinematographers are doing around the world, we hope it will become increasingly clear that one nomination in ninety years simply isn’t good enough.

MidWest WeirdFest

From the founder of Australia's two leading genre film festivals - A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Fantastic Planet, Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival - comes a cinematic celebration of all things fantastic, frightening, underground, off-beat, alternative, and just plain weird... to the American Midwest!

The Midwest is filled with dark and mysterious byways, strange critters, and mythical beasties. And the great state of Wisconsin has more than its share: from the very real historical monsters Ed Gein and Jeffery Dahmer, to legendary cryptids like the Beast of Bray Road and the Hodag, to strange and wonderful places such as the Forevertron, a UFO landing port, and the mythical town of killer midgets known as Haunchyville.... It's the perfect territory for a festival that focuses on weird cinema from all around the world.

The festival team dreams of MidWest WeirdFest evoking the awe and chills of the sideshow alley of a dark carnival, a place filled with wonders, terrors, and forbidden surprises. The cinematic equivalent of a collection of pulp magazines and underground comix. A film festival that not only celebrates and showcases independent genre cinema - horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller - but one that welcomes all types of underground film. From experimental and avant-garde to offbeat documentaries. The festival's seasoned programmers can't wait to see what cinematic wonders await in MidWest WeirdFest's first season of festival submissions!

MidWest WeirdFest's main venue is the Micon Downtown Cinema, located in the welcoming college town of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

CREATE FILM FESTIVAL

When communities are caught in the depths of conflict and oppression, and survival becomes part of everyday life, why do people continue to create? When arms and air raids, ceasefires and aid fail to bring an end to such situations, what can art offer and what can it change?

CREATE Film Festival seeks to examine and explore the issue of creativity in sites of conflict; to offer a unique opportunity to see not only the different ways in which creativity can fuel change, but the truly exceptional talent that exists in some of the world’s most challenging contexts, where people have to think creatively about everything in order to survive.

Creativity as resistance; as understanding; as peace building; as voice; as messenger; as an alternative. Film In Place of War.

Other Worlds Austin SciFi Film Festival

Science fiction comes in all shapes and sizes—horror, drama, comedy, shorts, and full-length films. Other World Austin will bring the best of all that is SciFi to Austin. The three-day festival will feature films from all over the world, and all films will be eligible for a cash prize Audience Award.

“With a team of programmers who love SciFi, write SciFi, or make SciFi films, we are in this for one reason only—to put on a great festival,” said Bears Fonté, OWA Founder and Director of Programming.

“We are looking for great stories that aren’t afraid to push the boundaries of the audience, thrilling them both visually and intellectually,” continued Fonté.

As director of programming for Austin Film Festival for the last two years, Fonté saw many SciFi films that were submitted, but could not be included in the final selection. Also, Fonté loves the programming at Fantastic Fest, but by representing so many genres, he knows they can’t focus on science fiction.  In addition, most of the films playing Fantastic Fest tend to be premieres or big-budget studio films.  “There are a ton of SciFi films out there, maybe they’ve played another festival, maybe they are a bit more indie, but right now those films have nowhere to play in Austin,” Fonté believes. “I want to create an outlet for those films. Other Worlds Austin is firmly committed to supporting these filmmakers by giving them exhibition opportunities that might not otherwise be available.”

To submit a film to Other Worlds Austin, go to OtherWorldsAustin.com or Withoutabox.com. There you will find submission guidelines, rules, and a helpful FAQ.
