DRIVE-ing AT CANNES, with Ryan Gosling

user
This was a very endearing press conference, especially in light of Lars Von Trier’s press conference two days prior for MELANCHOLY (2011) that still had everyone’s head spinning in Cannes. Von Trier’s comments on his Nazi sympathies as well as his protested desire to return to Denmark and focus only on soft and hardcore porn had everyone at Cannes thinking twice about Danish cinema and its praiseworthy art-house directors. Nicolas Winding Refn is a former student of Von Trier...

Cannes 2011: Palme d'Or race begins to come into focus

user
Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Courtesy of IMDb. It's never too early to begin handicapping the Palme d'Or race.  The film-festival world's most prestigious prize captures the attention of attendees in Cannes the way the New Hampshire primary mesmerizes political pundits -- it's hashed out and obsessed over for every possible shade of meaning -- and provides a film festival with a certain level of suspense. With the competition now one-third underwa...

For many people, British urban cinema came into its’ own with the premiere of ‘Adulthood’ on June the 20th 2009. 2 years on, the genre has now spawned its’ first spoof with the cheekily titled Anuvahood. Such is the beauty of the English language that a word can mean so many things to so many people – let’s just say the word BUFF wa...

Time Tripping To The 1970s

user
Ah, New York City in the 1970s......while the city was crumbling into a cesspool of urban decay, vigilante violence and moral morass (with the federal government looking away while the city declared bankruptcy), the art underground was, in fact, in full flower. This paradox (or not nearly one, if one contemplates other times and places where the social environment was in chaos and the artistic output was intense, say Berlin in the 1920s) is the focus of several films that are curre...
