Munich
Bavaria has been a cinema stronghold in Germany for over 100 years. While many German film companies and filmmakers have migrated to Berlin in the last decade, Munich still remains the main hub for the German film industry. Directors like Doris Dorrie and Sonke Wortmann have been famous Bavarian film names for the last few decades. In recent years, Bavarian films have won innumberable prizes at home and abroad, including Oscars for Florian Gallenberger (Quero ser), Caroline Link (Nowhere In Afri...
Anyone wondering if there is film festival life in the Czech Republic after Karlovy wouldn't have long to wait. Barely two weeks after the closing of the KV International Film festival on July 12 where Czech films did very well in terms of prizes and recognition, another gathering of the Czech film tribes is taking place in the remote southern town of Uherske Hradiste (in the Moravian region near Brno). While this festival is known here as "The Summer Film School", don't let the name fool you -...

The Belgian competitor "Tanghi Argentini" by Guy Thys receives the award of the 2008 MUNICH INTERNATIONAL short film festival, being granted Kodak film material for his next project. In this 13 minute modern fairy tale, office clerk André (Dirk van Dijck) tries to make his colleagues happy despite the faceless and cold atmosphere at their work place. Instead of the classical cliché Christmas gifts, he wants to give his colleagues something real and precious. More information on the winning fil...

While I guess I am just one of the lucky ones. For my trip from New York to Fort Lauderdale to attend the Palm Beach International Film Festival, which opened last evening, I was fatefully booked on Airtran Airlines, instead of American Airlines, the mechanically challenged carrier that has been forced to cancel thousands of flights this week due to maintenance problems. Apparently, many U.S. and international guests were slated to fly in to Florida via American Airlines, which is the largest ai...

So I came to the last night of the screenings at Aspen Shortsfest filled with high expectations. Generally, the first and last programs are filled with great films. Program 7 fluctuated between good and fair films. The good ones included: CHIEF, TAXI, and my favorite PETER AND BEN. It’s another quirky English doc depicting the relationship of Peter (a man), and Ben (a ram). Both opt to live outside their respective flocks, and with each other. The eighth and last program of the...
