Fantasporto Calling For Entries

1 - The TWENTIETH NINE edition of the OPORTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - FANTASPORTO 2009 will take place from 20th February till 1st of March

2 - The Festival main purpose is the screening and promotion films of quality, both aesthetically and thematically, and to seek new forms and methods of filmmaking.

3 - The Festival has eight sections 

3.1 - Official Section - Competition for Fantasy Films - feature and short films (maximum 15 minutes length) including the Méliès d'Argent Award for the Best European Fantasy Film- European feature and short films

3.2. - Directors Week - Competition for Feature Films (no thematic strings attached)

3.3. - Orient Express Official Section (for Asiatic feature films)Non- Competitive

3.4. - Panorama & Première

3.5. - Anima-te (Animation Features and shorts)

3.6. - Panorama of Portuguese films

3.7. - Porto in Shorts

3.7. - Retrospectives


4 - The Festival aims at:
a) Giving the city of Oporto a multimedia cultural forum.
b) Dignifying the Portuguese Cinema and encouraging the film production in Portugal.

5 - The participating producers, directors and sales agents may present short or full-length films under the following conditions:
a) To be screened in 35mm or digital betacam (only accepted in special cases)- feature films and short films
b) To have English subtitles or to be spoken in English.
c) To have been produced between 2008 and 2009.
d) To be the first public screening of the film in Portugal, if entering for the Competitive Sections.

6 - THE ENTRY FORM CAN BE FOUND IN THE INTERNET at the festival's site, then downloaded, filled in and sent by fax or mail TO THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE TILL THE 1st DECEMBER and the Screener till the 15th December 2008.

7 - To submit a film to selection, the producer must send an entry form accompanied by the following materials:
a) Screener (all regions) - mandatory
b) press release
PLEASE NOTE: Screeners and promotional materials sent to the Festival for selection are not returned.

8 - If the film is selected, the following documentation should be sent as soon as possible:
8.1 For Electronic Translation
a) Dialogue list of the film
b) Screener (all regions)

8.2 For Promotion
a) At least five (5) press stills or a digital press kit
b) Three (3) posters 100 x 70cm
c) Two (2) press-books or flyers
d) Betacam PAL or DIGIBETA PAL trailer or EPK from the film, for TV promotion

9 - THE PRINTS OF THE FILMS SHOULD BE IN POSSESSION OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE ON THE 15th FEBRUARY 2009 (deadline if entering for any of the Competitive Sections)

9.1 - The 35mm prints must be send through DHL (account number to be informed by the festival) directly to:

9.2 - The transport expenses of the prints of the feature films run on account of the festival, except when returned to another Film Festival per request of the producer of the film. Concerning the short films the prints must be sent on account of the producers/directors. The festival will pay for their return.

9.3 - The Organizers will bear the expenses for the storage and insurance of the prints.

9.4 - The Festival insurance coverage includes: All risks: theft or fire; loss or disappearance; total or partial damage. The insurance company covers for all sections of the festival, whatever the nature of the material such as: *format 35mm; *negative: Black and White or color; *length: short or long; *subject: fiction, animation; *support: film, videotape, videocassette.

10 - A committee appointed by the Organizers will select the films submitted to the Competitive Sections of the Festival.

11 - The Organizers will nominate three International Juries.
a) Jury of the Official Section for Fantasy Films and Méliès d'Argent
b) Jury of the Official Section Directors Week
c) Jury of the Official Section Orient Express

12 - The International Jury of the Official Section for Fantasy Films will grant the following awards:
a) FANTASPORTO Best Film Award
b) Best Direction
c) Best Actor
d) Best Actress
e) Best Screenplay
f) Best Special Effects
g) Special Award of the Jury
This award will be given to a film whose artistic and technical aspects present a high level of originality.
h) Best Fantasy Short Award
i) The International Jury will also grant the "Méliès D'Argent Award", for the Best European Fantasy Feature Film and for the Best European Fantasy Short Film, presented in the festival. The winners of the Oporto Méliès Award are the candidates to the "Méliès d'Or Award", an event organized each year by the European Fantasy Film Festival Federation.

13 - The International Jury of the Directors Week will grant the following awards:
a) Directors Week Best Film Award
b) Best Director
c) Best Screenplay
d) Directors Week Special Award of the Jury - for originality.
e) Best Actor
f) Best Actress

14 - The International Jury of the Orient Express official section will grant the following awards:
a) Orient Express Best Film Award
b) Orient Express Special Award

15 - The Organizing Committee will decide on all matters not provided in these regulations, in compliance with the application of the International Regulations for festivals. The participation in Fantasporto 2009 implies the acceptance of these regulations.

16- The official designation of the Oporto Festival is: Festival International de Cinema do Porto - FANTASPORTO
a) The Oporto International Film Festival is held annually in February and goes now to its 29th edition.
b) The Oporto Festival was founded by the editors of the film magazine Cinema Novo, and is sponsored by the Portuguese State and private sponsors.
c) The Festival awards have no monetary value and are represented as a trophy for the winners and diplomas for every participating film.
d) The Festival receives entry forms from all over the world.
e) The Festival runs in several theatres and screens nearly 250 feature films and 100 shorts each year.
f) The press coverage of the Festival is made by all nation-wide newspapers, radio stations and television networks and cabel networks, coming also from other European countries. This allows press dossiers of nearly 5 000 clippings each year, which represent a unique media coverage in Portugal for similar cultural events.
g) Nearly 100,000 entries per year is the average of the Festivals past editions.

Difficulties encountered by a worker

Made with utmost care and with consideration of all pros and cons of an ordinary worker falls under wrong hands when he landed in the airport, and had been rescued by workers travelling throughout country, day in day out.
