Bakunawa Fest [Fantastic Film, Arts + Music Festival]

BAKUNAWA FEST (formerly Bakunawa Young Cinema) is the first fantastic and genre-based film, art & music festival in the Philippines and the longest-running fantastic filmfest in Southeast Asia. Bakunawa is a mythical dragon-like creature in Philippine mythology that devoured moons. Because we are a genre-bending film fest, we want to flip the Bakunawa's role and we want it to instead symbolize the creative monsters inside us.

Bakunawa Festival has an annual film camp and series of film workshops for young Filipino filmmakers that culminates into a section of our festival, producing mostly genre films (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, folk, noir, folk, etc). The films that the film camp participants produce competes in a unique section created for young filmmakers.

Bakunawa Fest loves new visions, new voices. We support young promising filmmakers, artists and musicians who either have no access to expensive workshops and may not have the name/recognition to be programmed in a festival. Since our third edition, we have included a section that screens curated local and international films - mainly for educational purposes. Most of the Bakunawa Film Camps are done as outreach programs/workshops and are hosted by different cities in the Philippines.

During the pandemic years and lockdowns from 2020-2022, we have temporarily migrated to mostly online screenings but, in 2023, we shall conduct more live screenings following health protocols. For our tenth edition, we will do a semi-hybrid festival wherein we screen more films in live venues and do a limited program online.

We also continue our partnership with SolarFlix TV wherein we show curated film programs on Philippine Primtime TV, screening to Filipino audiences all over the Philippines reaching to millions of viewers.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Review: Witch ghost will be the soul survivor?

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Review: Witch ghost will be the soul survivor? Alternately calling itself a horror story and a humorous tale, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (Labyrinth, Maze) does raise a few laughs. The horror, however, fails to strike terror. Songs, literally thrust into the film and one of them relegated to the end credit titles, are catchy, but they are either mushy or foot-tapping, neither kind blending with the theme. There is indeed a labyrinth of explanations for some of the spooky goings on in...

Tokyo CINEMASTERS Film Festival Call for Entries

Welcome to Tokyo CINEMASTERS International Film Festival.
We are hosting our 1st Annual Festival in OCT 1st 2020 at Tokyo Cine Center.

Through discovering films and directing talent from across the globe, our film festival was founded with the mission of developing the next generation of cinema.
Japan loves all cinema, regardless of country, language, or race.
The culture of watching films with subtitles is well established here, with releases from a multitude of nations each year.

However, the majority of those releases are limited to commercial movies. The reality is that there are a wealth of fantastic overseas directors and films lying dormant that we’re never exposed to. The lack of “international” film festivals in Japan has also been an issue.

Based in Tokyo, a place where new and diverse booms are born, this festival brings together films and people active on a global stage.
A festival where you can see cinematic work that cross boundaries of race and language.

Fantasy Island, Review: Risks submersion

Fantasy Island, Review: Risks submersion Inspired is equal measure by two incompatible sources as divergent as Agatha Christie and the U.S.S.R. film Solaris, Fantasy Island plays deep desires against harsh realities in an implausible tale that is part vendetta, part science fiction and part psychic phenomena. There are too many back-stories and unexplained events, as a result of which the movie gets bogged down. In the end, you will make sense of it only if you stop analysing or questioning t...

The Grudge, Review: Grudging a sequel

The Grudge, Review: Grudging a sequel A horror film has to deliver high voltage terror that not only reaches the benchmark set by recent movies in the genre but rise above it, if it hopes to make significant impact. It can use tropes like jump-cuts and four-frame cuts to jolt you, yet there has to be enough juice to hold the film together and tap the fear factor recurrently, for 90-120 minutes. The Grudge fails on these counts, though it must be granted, without any grudge, that it is welcomi...

2010 -  The world was introduced to the Crawleys and their personnel. “Downton Abbey” took viewers by storm. I’m bed-ridden. I’m fighting a letter that more often than not, carries a death sentence.  Years pass by, I travel extensively in-between treatement sessions, I co-produce a documentary, and I write a lot. I’m young but I feel a higher sense of urgency. I eventually conquered, the beast is down.  2017 -  R...
