"New Directors/New Films 40" March 23-April 3, 2011

user
New Directors/New Films March 23-April 3, 2011 March 25th, 2011 § Leave a Comment 12 days, over 25 films, and 2 great venues! If  you worshiped the 90′s alternative grunge scene, thought Kurt Cobain was the sh!t, and admired the strength of  Courtney Love’s band, “Hole”, then “Hit So Hard”, P. David Ebersole’s rockumentary about the  life and near death experiences of  the redheaded female drummer, Patty Schemel, is one NOT to miss.  “Hit so Hard”...

THUNDER SOUL, a review

user
THUNDER SOUL screened at the 13th Thessaloniki Film Festival last week at the Olympian Theater to an international audience. Winner of the Pan-African Film festival of Los Angeles 2011, is the documentary film THUNDER SOUL (USA, 2010) about inspiration, heroism, music, the vibrant 70’s and last but not least Thunder Soul… This is the story about a funk/soul band in the 1970s (my favorite decade) that began in the all-American Kashmere highschool, Houston, Texas. This was a tim...

The Healing Power of Music

user
It has been a long accepted article of faith that music can transcend time and space and jog the mind to realizations and awakenings. Music therapy has become one of tools used by professionals to treat those with memory loss due to disease, braiin tumors or simply old age. The power of music to heal is at the core of the new American indie film THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED, the directorial debut of producer-turned-director Jim Kohlberg. The film made its local premiere last Thursday as a special scr...

Natural selection: Texas Film Wins Top Awards At SXSW

user
Austin, Texas, the state capitol and the venue for the South By Southwest Film, Music and Interactive Festival (SXSW), is an island of liberalism in a sea of conservative attitudes. While Texas is the definite "red" state, characterized by its conservative politics and rigid social attitudes, SXSW is by design and nature a progressive affair. This slightly schizophrenic relationship has created some interesting moments at SXSW in the past week, with a film that uncovers the hidden secrets behind...

Pegase, a new Moroccan film got wings

Zineb: ‘Do you like living this way? ‘   Rihanna: ‘Yes. Because I can feel the ground. Not like me'   Then Rihanna begs to be left alone so she can ‘dream'.   When I met director Mohamed Mouftakir we were sitting next to each other in Dubai at the 7th Dubai film festival during the premier to another North African film. At the end of that film I asked Mohamed if he liked it. He said, ‘no' because it was to...

Harry Belafonte in Berlin

Harry Belafonte, US Entertainer: "I think celebrity is an opportunity and if you use that opportunity in the fullest service to human need, then you deserve celebrity. If celebrity is just about another night at the party, another night at the bank, another night at self anointing, then it's a waste of celebrity but more importantly, more importantly it's a waste of life and I was very

The Berlinale Camera to Lia van Leer, Jerome Clement, Franz and Rosemarie Stadler

user
The Berlinale Camera is awarded to a film personality or an institution to whom the film festival feels especially attached. This award is a way of expressing thanks and has been given every year since 1986. Between 1986 and 2003 the Berlinale Camera was donated by the Berlin jeweller David Goldberg. Since 2004, the Berlinale Camera has been sponsored and manufactured by Georg Hornemann Objects. For the Berlinale 2008, the trophy has been redesigned by the Düsseldorf-based goldsmith himself. Belafonte in Berlin --and a Wiff of Madonna ...

by Alex Deleon In a flash Day 5 (of ten) has already arrived and the fest is already half over, although it seems like it just began. Like it or not what really makes a  festival like Berlin second only to Cannes --besides the 400 or so films from around the world shown --is the St***ar power it generates, and festival director Dieter Kosslick makes no bones about this. He goes all out to invite as many big name stars as possible and even claims that the worst nightmare of his ten year ...

They were an amazing duo! Watch the video below and see what I’m talking about: And if you were wondering - no, there was NO background music. That was ALL Blake. -Dianna Renée ...

Sundance Raps with Lil Jon and Snoop Dogg

user
What do Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon and The Sundance Film Festival have in common?  The World Famous HarryO’s!    It’s Thursday, the opening day of the Sundance Film Festival.  Main Street is a breeze to drive down and the public parking lots are free - as opposed to the harsh $20 they’ll charge starting Friday.  Now I know why a local store clerk at the nearby outlet mall told my friend everyone in Park City hates us festival folk.  At $20 for parking, I’d be bitter too.  ...

Jamaica Reggae Film Festival

The Jamaica Film Academy has moved the dates of the REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL 2011 from February to May 23-27, 2011, to be held at the Whitter Village, Ironshore, Montego Bay.  With its commitment to highlighting Jamaica's reggae culture in film, the Reggae Film Festival will celebrate two international milestones during the week-long event. The birthday of Emperor Haile Selassie I will be honoured at the Opening Night Gala on May 23, while the UN Year of African Descendants will be celebrated with a special programme of films on May 25, African Liberation Day. Other features of the Festival include the Make a Film in 24 Hours competition, a Children's Film programme, a Film Seminar featuring specially invited VIP Guests and a final night Honour Awards showcase of the winning films.

The REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL has been invited to be part of two major cultural events in Britain this year. The Drum Arts Centre in Birmingham, the largest venue for Black arts in Europe, will present the REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL as part of its Summer season's theme of Reggae & Revolution, while the Wandsworth Festival to be held in London in August, is designed to showcase Caribbean Culture. The Best of the Reggae Film FEstival will be presented at programmes in Atlanta, USA in June and in South Africa in July, while in August the Festival will once again be a feature of the Rototom Reggae Sunsplash in Spain.

Films already entered include the US feature film 'ROCKSTEADY' featuring David Hinds of Steel Pulse; SUPERSTONIC SOUND, a tribute to Black British film maker and dubmaster DJ Don Letts; EVERYDAY SUNSHINE,a documentary about the US rock-punk-reggae group Fishbone narrated by Laurence Fishbourne; and THE SKIN by HamaFilms Antigua, featuring Carl Bradshaw. Invited international guests include Laurence Fishbourne, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lennox Lewis, Carl Lumley and Mitzi Allen, as well as Jamaican film makers Chris Browne, Ras Kassa and Storm Saulter.

There are several advantages to moving the event to the new date in May.  Since announcing the February date, the organizers have received notification of several important films that wish to be included in the Festival, but that are not yet ready for screening in February. They include a major British TV series and several Jamaican feature and documentary films that hope to include the Reggae Film Festival in their film's resume and hopefully, awards.

The Whitter Village welcomes the new dates. "I am pleased to have more time for the Village to settle in after its December opening," says proprietor Angela Whitter, "and to make sure that everything is in place for what know will be the most unusual and interesting event taking place in Montego Bay this year, at the most unusual and interesting place in Montego Bay."

The REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL continues its plans to make the 2011 event a worthy showcase of Jamaican film culture.
