Riding The New Wave of Romanian Cinema

Monday, October 22---------On Saturday, veteran film journalist Nick Roddick led a provocative discussion on the sudden emergence of film gems from what had seemed like a most unlikely source: Romania. 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS, 2 DAYS (which is screening at the London Film Festival) was the surprise winner of the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival (a first from the cinema of that rather unknown and misunderstood country). Attention is definitely focused on the former Communist state as a ...

Cannes is over

user
After two crazy weeks, Cannes is now over. Most people are back home. A few are still there to finish editing their stories, videos, TV shows... I left Sunday to watch the award ceremony on TV. Awards, as always, were quite surprising. The Palme d'Or (see all videos) went to Ken Loach's the Wind that Shakes the Barley, not my own favorite. Surprisingly, no prize was awarded to Marie-Antoinette from Sophia Coppola nor for the Pan's Labyrinth from Guillermo Del Toro. See you soon... ...

The Search For (Some, Any) News on Cannes......

user
During my current experiment of trying to "do" Cannes while not actually being there (in others words, virtually if not physically), it is quite astonishing to me that so little actual coverage is available to the average American consumer. Yes, we did catch a glimpse of Tom Hanks on the red carpet, and read much speculation about the fate of THE DA VINCI CODE, but it seems that anything that is not part of the tyranny of celebrity gossip finds scant space in American newspapers or television s...
