Jeremy ColsonJeremy Colson's festival coverage. Film Festival ambassador to filmfestivals.com  Cambodia film fest 2009 to be held in KampotCAMBODIA's film and video festival is to be held this year at Kampot, a small attractive town about four hours drive south of the capital Phnom Penh.
Cambofest, the country's first internationally recognized independent movie festival, will commence its third season on 04 December, running Film categories at the festival include: Fiction Features & Shorts * Doc Features and Shorts * Animation * Social Issues * "Universal Language" * Very Short Movies (under 10 minutes) * Cambodian Filmmakers Showcase* The main venue in Kampot will be the Cinema Royale, one of the few vintage movie theatres remaining in Cambodia. An announcement about other venues is expected soon. Once a stronghold of the infamous Khmer Rouge, Kampot is situated on the Kampong Bay River at the foot of the Elephant Mountains, and is the capital of Kampot province. Quiet lanes, classic French colonial and Chinese architecture and very few tourists all serve to lend Kampot a quaint, welcoming, small town ambiance - very different to nearby Sihanoukville. Visitors come to Kampot for a taste of provincial Cambodia, relaxed atmosphere, and to use the town as a base to visit nearby attractions such as Bokor Hill Station, the beaches and islands of Kep and the rest of southeastern Cambodia. Interesting comment Steve. I have to tell you that the last time I was in Kampot was in 1991, and to be honest I don't remember noticing a cinema there. I had other things on my mind. The Khmer Rouge had barely left the town. Many of them were still hiding out in the hills nearby and they used to come into town at night to exact revenge on people they thought had helped the opposition.
I'd be interested to learn more about the history of the Cinema Royale. Do you have any details, and do you have any photos of the cinema, either from the old days or as it is today?

yo bud, i have just read the news about cambofest, exciting! tho i am intrigued about the cinema, are they really going to use the old cinema? it's in a hell of a state and will take a lot of work, anyways i wish them well if thats the plan and look forward to seeing the whole thing running.

STEVE: It's 18 years since I was in Kampot and to be honest I didn't even know there was a cinema there at the time. I'd really like to know more about the cinema, not just because it's the venue for Cambofest 2009, but also because I bet it has a fascinating history. For starters, could I persuade you to send me some pictures of the place so that I can share them on this blog?
