Prospect opens Fantasporto Feb 22
TODAY, FRIDAY 22, IS THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE 39TH EDITION OF FANTASPORTO
FROM SCIENCE FICTION TO TERROR PASSING FROM FANTASY TO CORRUPTION...
Horror, science fiction, fantasy, romanticism and international intrigue involving high finance and international politics, there are strong attractions for all tastes in the first weekend of the 39th Fantasporto - Porto International Film Festival, which opens Friday officially, starting its competitive phase, and extending until March 3, Rivoli - Teatro Municipal do Porto.
PROSPECT, THE OPENING MOVIE
Canadian-American co-production "Prospect" by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, to be shown at the Official Opening Session of the 39th Fantasporto, is an excellent example of independent American cinema. It is a science fiction work in which a teenager and her father go to a remote and toxic moon, hoping to find wealth. They find a fabulous lode, but they are also faced with various unexpected difficulties. The film, with the notable Sophie Thatcher and also Pedro Pascal, obtained excellent reviews in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, being selected for the festivals of Seattle and Denver. A surprise of the cinema produced at the end of 2018.
At 23:30, a full copy of Ridley Scott's "Alien" (1979), a tribute to Fantasporto, follows the 40-year anniversary of its debut to the original of the celebrated saga of the same name.
In the Small Auditorium, he highlighted the Taiwanese Film Retrospective with Lin Tuan-Chiu's "The Husband's Secret", which premiered internationally, followed by "His Master's Voice", a science fiction film by Hungarian Gyorgy Palfi (CF ), director of Fantas's shock film "Taxidermy," the 2007 Public Prize.
This is another Sci-Fi work based on a story by Stanislaw Lem (author of Solaris).
AMERICAN, BRAZILIAN, KOREAN, OR HUNGARIAN
POST THE FANTAS TO "SCALD"
"The Witch in the Window", horror film by American Andy Milton, in the official section of Fantastic Cinema opens the Saturday program, followed by the Asian box office hit "The Witch: Part 1- The Subversion", of South Korean Hoon-Jung Park, a horror action film also in competition, which was No. 1 at the box office in Korea.
And at 19:00, "Albatroz" by Brazilian Daniel Augusto, in a European debut, a thriller written by Braulio Mantovani, screenwriter of "Tropa de Elite" and "Cidade de Deus", a film that gave him an Oscar nomination .
The main highlight of the day is "Human, Space, Time and Human", a horror drama by South Korean master Kim Ki-Duk (CF / OE), several times awarded at the festival, which won the Orient Express section in 2013 the movie "Pietá". A movie with possibly shocking scenes.
Another 'habitué' of Fantasporto is the Hungarian Károly Mézsáros, who this year brings us "X - The eXploited", a thriller to the Directors' Week (SR) contest, about a police woman having serious panic attacks but discovering a tenebrous history. This is the second feature film of this filmmaker who in 2015 won the Fantasporto Award for Best Picture with "Liza, The Fox-Fairy". Georgy Palfi and Karoly Meszáros will be in Porto to present the two Hungarian films in competition.
In the Small Auditorium, the Taiwanese Film Retrospective continues with Lin Tuan-Chiu's "May 13th, Night of Sorrow", a new international premiere, followed by the 17:15 "Open" by Orsi Nagypál , film included in the retrospective of the New Cinema of Hungary.
"Dos Veces Tú" by Solomón Askenazi, in a world premiere, marks the presence of Mexico in the program of this Fantasporto, in whose plot two friends exchange husbands during a wedding just to have fun, a game that will bring a series of complications and new and strange relationships.
"Waiting for Sunset" by Filipino Carlo Catu, in an international debut, about an elderly couple who have lived together for a long time without being able to get married and who face a strange challenge. A tale of tenderness and humanity, with great interpretations that won the Best Film at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.
AMERICANS BEHIND THE HILLS AND CHINESE IN THE HARBOR!
GREAT FILMS PRESENTED BY THEIR ACTORS
The Sunday program opens with a strong plate, "Reborn", a horror film by British filmmaker Julian Richards (director of "Darklands" and "The Last Horror Movie" and worked for Amblin), included in the official section of Fantastic Cinema, which also competes with the following film, "The Head Hunter" by Jordan Downey (USA), both displayed in the presence of its directors and producers.
If in "Reborn" we already know that the emotions will be in the red, The Head Hunter, is another horror film coming, this time from the United States, but with a Portuguese "leg": the film was shot in Trás os Montes! A beautiful surprise.
Also worthy of mention is the world premiere of the science fiction film "Last Sunrise" by Chinese director Ren Wen Ren, a film that has already become viral on social networks and the Asian press, as it is the first production of the genre to come from China. Its exhibition also in the presence of the director and producer, and precedes another one of the highlights of the festival.
OF OFF-SHORES CORRUPTION
THE AMAZING FANTASY OF IN FABRIC
At 9:00 PM, it's time for Alex Winter's "The Panama Papers" on investigative reporting on one of the world's largest tax evaders, ranging from Putin and Trump to country ministers, finance personalities, politicians, celebrities and anonymous people who put their money in "off-shores", indifferent to the rest of the world that sinks in social inequality and poverty. Elijah Wood (the Hobbit) is the narrator.
Sunday's show ends with a 23:15 show on "In Fabric," a horror comedy by Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio director, winner of Fantas 2012) at a large department store, Corte Ingles, one of the most acclaimed films by the English critics at the end of last year and a pearl of originality. At the Small Auditorium begins the exhibition of the films competing for the Portuguese Cinema Prize, with ten short films, followed by Attila Till's film Kills on Wheels (2016) at 17:15, with which he continues the retrospective of the New Hungarian Cinema. "Framed", a horror film by our well-known Marc Martínez Jordán, focused on an application that allows us to see everything on social networks, calls into question the limits of technology. The program of the Small Auditorium for Sunday closes with three notable mediums: "Set-Up", of the Greek Vassilis Goudelis, in world premiere, passed during the Civil War that followed World War II in Greece; the film of this last Natal of TV Globo, "Escape of Natal", and the final version of the director of "The Shipment", being that the short version will be exhibited to the contest on Monday, at 15.00hs in the Great Auditorium.
There is world cinema in Porto. To see before everyone else. Enjoy.
