Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Festival treats this monday and tuesday

After the first weekend, the 39th Fantasporto will continue on Monday and Tuesday, at Rivoli Teatro, already in a rhythm of cruise, continuing to propose to the public the films of strong impact selected for the competition for the various competitions as well as the retrospective of cinema about Taiwan's 60's woman (the festival's whooping craze) and the brand-new Hungarian cinema. Highlights include the continuation of the Competitive Program of Portuguese Cinema and the Official Selection of Fantastic Film Short Films with honors of exhibition in the Grand Auditorium of the Teatro Rivoli, short films, which are often places of experimentation and search, functioning as a preview of the future of the cinema of the future.

There will be 12 short films representing eight countries from the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom (2), USA (2), Portugal (2), Israel, France, Spain (2) and Canada. Also interesting is the presence in Porto to present his films of Candidates, Emirates, Israel Directors and others. At 6:00 p.m., we will have the European debut of the fantastic "Doe" by the American Justin Foia, about a man who wakes up totally amnesic, but with the surprising gift of speaking all languages, which leads him to start an investigation to discover their identity. Film to be presented by its director, the same happening at night, more concretely at 9:00 PM, when a work of the thriving and multi-award-winning film in Fantasporto cinema filipino, "Waiting for Sunset" by Carlo Catu, was presented for the first time this one will be seen outside of his Country, about an old couple that lives together for a long time without being able to marry and that faces a strange challenge. A tale of tenderness and humanity, with great interpretations, in an award-winning film for Best Picture at the Cinemalaya Independent Film of the Philippines.

At 23:00, one of the festival's most notable films, Asia-wide box office hit "Monstrum," by South Korean Jong-Ho Huh, recent winner of the Sitges Festival Audience Award and competing at Fantasporto for sections Official Fantastic Cinema and Orient Express. Spent in a royal palace with its power games in which a just show perceived all menace and becomes the enemy to shoot down. A fantastic shivering movie that, at heart, is a very modern political parable.

At the Small Auditorium in the afternoon we will have my Portuguese cinema in the Competition between Cinema Schools and Cinema of Taiwan, and at 9:15 pm, the Norwegian horror film with Severin Eskeland's "Lust" appears in the non-competitive Première & Panorama. The program of this room ends with the screening at 23:15 of "Decision: Liquidation", a major Russian production of Mosfilm (with well-known director Karen Shaknazarov, director of Mosfilm, as producer). This is an action film by Alexander Aravin, based on real facts. It focuses on the hunt for Islamic terrorists responsible for the massacre at the school in Beslan, Russia, where hundreds of children were murdered in September 2004.

On Tuesday, the Big Auditorium program begins at 3:30 PM with the world premiere of the supernatural horror film "Demon Eye", British Ryan Simons (director of "Seizure" and coming to Porto with its producers) , competing with the official section of Fantastic Cinema, followed by 17:30 "Living Space" by Australian Steven Spiel, also a contender for prizes in the same official section.

At 21:00 the film "School Service" by Filipino Louie Lagdameo Ignacio (who visits us with part of the film team) will be shown in the Official Director's Week and Orient Express sections. A movie that follows the tragic story of Maya, a kidnapped girl on her way to the provincial school that is forced by the group of kidnappers to be part of the beggining network she controls in the violent streets of Manila.

The last film of the day is "The Fare" by DC Hamilton (USA), part of the official section of Fantastic Cinema, premiered in Europe, a fantasy drama about a taxi driver who falls in love with a customer who suddenly disappears from the back seat which will be presented by its producer.
In the Small Auditorium, the afternoon begins with another session of the Portuguese Cinema Prize, with the passage of films competing for the prize for the Best School by the Portuguese Institute of Photography, which is the first candidate, with eight short films, followed by two short films that represent the University of Beira Interior, another newcomer school in Fantasporto.

Then at 17:15, we review the Hungarian filmmaker Károly Mézsáros, who, in Oporto, this year brings us "X - The eXploited", a thriller to the Directors' Week contest, about a police woman having panic attacks serious. This is the second feature film of this filmmaker who in 2015 won the Fantasporto Film Award with "Lisa, The Fox-Fairy".
