At the 8th Summer Berlinale from July 16 to 19, the Open Air Cinema in Friedrichshain is presenting - in collaboration with radioeins - five highlights from the 60th Berlin International Film Festival's programme. These films have yet to be released in German movie theatres.

Besides Bal (Honey), winner of this year's Golden Bear, three audience favourites will be shown from the Panorama, Forum and Perspektive Deutsches Kino sections. Festival Director Dieter Kosslick will open the Summer Berlinale, and heads of the Berlinale sections Wieland Speck, Christoph Terhechte and Linda Söffker as well as programme manager Thomas Hailer will present the films.

Friday, July 16, 2010: 9:30 p.m.

Berlinale Perspektive Deutsches Kino: Renn, wenn Du kannst (Run If You Can), Germany 2009; director: Dietrich Brüggemann, 112 min. Presented by Linda Söffker, head of the Perspektive Deutsches Kino.

Ben is intelligent, witty and tied to a wheelchair. He and his new carer, who is doing community service instead of the military, get to know Annika, a cellist. The three become friends - but then the two boys both fall in love with the girl. What began as a game turns for Ben into a journey to his deepest fears.

Berlinale Shorts: Händelse Vid Bank (Incident by a Bank), Sweden 2010; director: Ruben Östlund, 12 min.

Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Short Film

A detailed and humorous reconstruction of a failed bank robbery that occurred in June 2006. A real-time study with over 96 people choreographed for the camera.

Berlinale Competition: Bal (Honey), Turkey / Germany 2010; director: Semih Kaplanoglu, 104 min.

Presented by programme manager Thomas Hailer.

Winner of the Golden Bear 2010 

After Yumurt (Egg) and Süt (Milk), this is the third and last film in Semih Kaplanoglu's trilogy: it is the story of a six-year-old boy who sets out - all alone in a dark and mysterious highland forest - to find his missing father, a beekeeper.

Sunday, July 18, 2010: 9:30 p.m.

Berlinale Panorama: Son of Babylon, Iraq / Great Britain / France / Netherlands / Palestinian Territories / United Arab Emirates / Egypt 2009; director: Mohamed Al-Daradji, 90 min.

Presented by Wieland Speck, head of the Panorama section.

A trip through Iraq, a country in such extreme turmoil that nobody knows what will happen next. A boy and his grandmother set out in search of the boy's father who has been missing since the Gulf War.

Monday, July 19, 2010: 9:30 p.m.

Berlinale Forum: Winter's Bone, USA 2010; director: Debra Granik, 100  min.

Presented by Christoph Terhechte, head of the Forum.

The family must not fall apart. That's why they need the house which Ree's father put up for his bail bond before he dissapeared. Ree has to find him, dead or alive. The trail leads to relatives who know a lot more than they're willing to admit.
