CYIFF - Cyprus International Film Festival History

CΥIFF operates within the network of Cultural International Film Festivals and is the first internationally oriented film festival which offers new and upcoming directors in multiple sectors of entertainment (such as feature films, short films, animations, music videos, dance films and video art) the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of a jury of internationally acclaimed cinema experts, directors and actors.

The awards are the "GOLDEN APHRODITE", production and crew services, shooting equipment facilities. Equally unique is the condition that these prizes must be utilized for their next project and spent in Cyprus and/or Greece. The volunteers are eligible to scholarships in prestigious Universities and Film Programs.

The 'CΥIFF - Cyprus International Film Festival - Golden Aphrodite' is the brainchild of a group of dedicated individuals, event organizers, film producers, cinema experts, multimedia and audio visual specialists.

The Cyprus International Film Festival - Golden Aphrodite takes place annually, since 2006, on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It was inaugurated by Minister of Education and Culture Mr Pefkios Georgiades and is supported by the Ministry of Tourism in Cyprus.

The Cyprus International Film Festival - Golden Aphrodite is the biggest both of glamour (red carpet, black tie) and of artistic high value cinema event of the whole region spilling over Cyprus' boundaries and spreading over the whole region with repercussions reaching worldwide.


CYIFF has a competitive section. Films produced the last 36 months, by emerging directors are selected for the screening program.

CYIFF promotes both Cypriot film directors and Cypriots artists living abroad through the film category "Nostimon Imar" and awarded Cypriot Film Directors, as well as Cyprus as a new cinema travel destination. The festival and the parallel events create an important meeting place for Cypriots and foreign filmmakers.

“CYIFF's GOT TALENT”:  September 30 – October 16, 2011

The 6th International Film Festival of Cyprus, one of the most important festivals for emerging artists is here. The excitement, the emotion and the passion for the art of cinema come together once again in the most beautiful Mediterranean island. Entries from 98 countries for 10 categories, that exceed the compatibility of the usual festivals, will compete for the "Golden Aphrodite" award. In these categories we meet feature and short length films, animation, anti-war films, children and teen films, films about dance and visualized poetry giving step in emerging filmmakers in particular. Among those movies two Cypriot feature films making their world premiere at this Festival. "Dinner with my sisters" by Michael Hapeshis and "Paramnesia" by Eleftherios Kakathymis.
Freshness and renewal waves by young artists are meeting the prestige and artistic recognition of this year's jury. On October 16 at the Pallas CinemaTheatre the multiaward-winning Greek actress Anna Synodinou, Cypriot filmmaker and producer Nicolas Demetriou, award-winning composer Maro Theodorakis, winning Indian producer Vivek Singhania and Van Papadopoulos program coordinator Cannes Classic, are invited to judge this year's contestants and award the winners. The "Golden Aphrodite" awards ceremony will host the Cypriot actress Olga Vanessa Aristodemou who excels in England and Hollywood.

Cyprus International Film Festival Day 5
The fifth edition of Cyprus International Film Festival was here! The biggest, most anticipated film festival not only in Cyprus but in a wide area was organized for another time in order to move, encharm, entertain and present the most auspicious film trends to the die-hard cinemagoers and to first- timers in getting to know significant pieces of the Seventh Art. All these have been presented through this year's multilayered program.

Cyprus International Film Festival has accomplished to become an established organization for its friends, an artistically integral, significantly important event, which counting film entries coming from 85 different countries in 2010, has succeeded in combining "classic" aspects of cinema with avant-garde cinema trends, innovative film schools and suggestions that indicate the future of film practice and theory.

This combination of different perspectives developing on a common basis was reflected in the best possible way on the Festival's Closing Ceremony where "Golden Aphrodite", organization's great Prize, as well as the other Awards were given to winners. A glamorous ceremony with special guests and many surprises for all the attendants followed up a five day carefully selected screening program.

A glamorous event which was attended by some significant personalities in the film industry and other fields as well, took place on October 18th at Pallas Theatre in Nicosia. Mrs Aigli Kammitsi, President of the Cultural Committee of the Municipality of Nicosia, Mr Fotis, Fotou, Mr George Iliopoulos for the European Committee Bureau in Cyrpus, Mrs Evi Rizou Greek Embassy in Cyprus Press Office representative, Mr Constantinos Christofides , Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs in the University of Cyprus and chairman of UCY Voice, Mr Vassilov, President of the Russian Cultural Centre in Cyprus, fashion designer Sia Dimitriades, Cyprus Tourism Organization Official Bakis Loizides, Marios Filippou and Onisilos Pavlides from Cyprus University Film Association as well as Micky Georgiou from PLUS TV. In 2006 Mr Fotis Fotou, former Chariman of Cyprus Tourism Organization along with former Minister of Education and Culture Pefkios Georgiades, whose memory and spirit is still alive, found and supported the festival. Mr Fotiou underlined the fact that the Festival has now become an acclaimed organization. The event was also attended by some of the Jury Committee Members who for this festival's edition were: the Cypriot actor and director Costas Demeitriou, the Greek actress and director Alexandra Pavlidou, the songwriter Kostas Cacogiannis, the film producer George Stefanopoulos, and the film critic Alexandros Romanos Lizardos.Award presentation was made by Cypriot actress Maria Filippou. During the event a special screening of the short film which was made during the workshop "Actor in front of the camera" organized and carried out by Thanassis Sarantos, took place. Nicosia's University Cinema Club awarded the best short and animation films.
