Since
1999, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society (MVFS) has grown from a dream of a
handful of volunteers into a vibrant year-round cultural organization with over
600 members., More
than 12,000 people attend MVFS events each year. In its first year, MVFS programming
consisted of a weekly summer night screening of a classic film at the Grange
Hall. Since the first time we turned down the lights in 1999, we have exhibited
over 700 films that
otherwise would not have been shown and enjoyed here. Our programming has
since grown to a regular weekly program at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, with supplemental
screenings at venues across the island, including the historic Tabernacle,
Union Chapel, Vineyard Playhouse, Capawock Theatre, MV Hebrew Center, and outdoor
at Featherstone Center for the Arts. Perhaps MVFS’s greatest achievement is the
annual Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival, now in its sixth year,
which takes place over four days each September and draws thousands of
film-goers from on and off the Island.

Yet, MVFS has one constant struggle— technical and artistic
limitations imposed by less-than-perfect screening venues and the lack of a
dedicated home in which our programming can expand. While the lovely Katharine
Cornell Theatre is usually (but not
always) available in the off-season, it still requires us to set up a projector
and sound system temporarily for each show. Even there, it’s not possible to project
the highest quality image or to deliver stereo sound. This current system of ever-changing
venues also prevents us from using DCI (Digital Cinema) equipment that would
allow us to bring to the Island the latest films that open in limited release
in major cities. In short, the lack of a permanent home deprives our viewers of
the first-class experience they deserve and should expect.

But There’s a Solution
on the Horizon!

We have an opportunity for a permanent home for MVFS.
Our new home will enable us to invest in and install a permanent DCI projector
and surround-sound in a comfortable climate-controlled environment with stadium
seating. Perhaps most important, we’ll be able to show several different movies
each week and multiple screenings of the most popular movies. We will also be
able to expand our current outreach efforts with other island non-profit
agencies, schools, and local filmmakers by programming specialty films and
events for them.
