Identitaria International Food&Wine Film Festival

Identitaria - Food & Wine Festival is an annual international event that aims to promote territorial identities of the world and to enhance their cultures and typicalities through the cinematic and photographic storytelling of food and wine traditions and of the arts related to food and wine-growing.
At the same time, the Festival aims to promote and enhance talented filmmakers and photographers to allow them a fruitful exchange of experiences, the direct comparison with the professionals of the sector and the expansion of skills, as well as of increasing the possibility of being known by a wider audience.

Cast

Director: Simon Welch.

In the "demi-monde" of night fishing, anglers on a French beach cast their lines. The camera follows their night-long toiling in obscurity, the contrast provided by the limited light sources resembling a scene from a baroque painting. Thus, a relatively ordinary activity takes on an otherworldly aspect, becoming an allegory for contemporary existence as well as for artistic production itself. For me, the situation evokes Miltonian-style scenarios of humans and rebel angels cast out of paradise and the film plays on Biblical fishing-related allusions (several of the apostles were said to be fisherman, and were described as ‘‘Fishers of men’’ and Christ was symbolized by a fish). Therefore, on a symbolic level, in the film the fishermen produce a ‘‘divine’’ signifier (i.e. the fish) which is subsequently disposed of, presumably leaving them to cast around for alternative significations.

SEA THE TRUTH

Director: Claudine Everaert.
After the worldwide success of “Meat the Truth”, which was translated in 13 different languages and released in 16 different countries, the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation has made another documentary, named “Sea the Truth”. The state of our oceans and seas is the main focus in “Sea the Truth”. Leading scientists such as Daniel Pauly suggest that if we continue to catch and eat fish at the current rate, the oceans and seas will be empty within 40 years. The hunt for fish is an economic monster on the run: large bottom trawlers are scraping the bottoms of the seas empty, taking with them all living things with destructive force. The massive amount of bycatch is thrown back into the sea, maimed or dead. Under the guidance of Dutch MP Marianne Thieme, two young marine biologists Marianne and Barbara, are searching worldwide for scientific information about the condition of our biggest ecosystems, which cover more than two thirds of our planet. Underwater photographer Dos Winkel shows them the beauty of marine life and the enormous threats to which it is exposed. For the documentary the producers filmed in Newfoundland, on Bonaire, on the North Sea, the Azores and at various locations in the Netherlands. Authorities offer the solution of sustainable fisheries projects while leading scientists say that every fish that is taken now, is one too many. This documentary shows that, unfortunately, there is no such thing as “sustainable fishing”. “Sea the Truth” premiered on May 19th in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. ~ www.seathetruth.nl ~

A story about a fish. Let it be a lesson to you.

A couple of years ago my parents, like a lot of elderly people, suddenly took to cruises. And in order to share their new-found love, they insisted that my wife and I join them on one. My wife and I, just so you know, are more accustomed to kayaking the headwaters of the Amazon than standing in line at the floating buffet, so when we got an opportunity to take part in one of the "activities", we jumped. We went snorkeling. ...

Milk Man

Director: James Rumsey.
Brian is a neurotic voyeur, trapped by fear in a routine existence. Fuelled by milk, each night he logs activities from outside his flat using a home-styled CCTV suite. His neighbour, Marina, likes Brian. She sees beyond his neurosis, to a man she’d like to know better. Brian likes her too, but is rendered dumb during routine doorstep encounters and so can never accept her hopeful invitations to share a cup of tea. Late on this night, Brian runs out of milk and must break his routine to venture out and get more. We join Brian the morning after, dishevelled, tired and with red stains on his usually pristine shirt. Flashes of what happened show Brian attacking a woman for the last of the milk.... A detective questions him.... No, a reporter.... With this reveal the night’s events are retold: a pregnant woman knocks some pasta sauce off a shelf as her contractions start and she doubles over in pain; she stumbles into Brian and drags him to the floor; in his struggle to get away from her Brian backs up into the sauce and it ends up staining his shirt. Brian, in a brave new world well outside his comfort zone, wants to run but chooses to stay and help the woman deliver her baby. In turn he gains a new, broader view of himself. The CCTV suite is turned off and he finally manages to stammers his way to accepting one of Marina’s invites for a cup of tea.
