A woman's descent into spirit.
Experimental film derived from video footage of an art installation by Kate E Deeming.
While most of the techniques in evidence - dissolves, fades, double exposures etc - were in use within a few years of the birth of cinema, they are presented here in a context which highlights their potential within the digital era, serving the needs of an ever-expanding visual language.
Threads was edited within a single editing program. No additional plug-ins were used.
Music: Scope J by Scott Walker (vocals by Ute Lemper). International festival screening rights secured.

The Swedenborg Short Film Festival 2011

Submissions are invited on a variety of themes and genres. Selected
submissions will be screened to a public audience at Swedenborg Hall in
central London; at the closing of the festival an award will be given
for Best Film.

El Cadáver Exquisito | Collaborations

Every sin is the result of a collaboration.

El Cadáver Exquisito
was a true collaboration and a blind one. From one artist’s hands to
another we discovered a film, formed from endless possibilities.
When Victor first approached me to edit the film I was excited but a little
hesitant as I was concerned it may be an ethnographic documentary abou...
El Cadáver Exquisito

El Cadaver Exquisito began as a seed of an idea but once it was
given birth it seemed we could only run to keep alongside its momentum.
I did a lot of writing for the film in the beginning as
Victor was shooting. We spoke of using a voice over, a narrator who
might tells its story like a fable. As the visuals and footage piled up
however, it was clear they wanted to be their own narrator.

Film posters have been used since the earliest public exhibitions of film.
They began as outside placards listing the programme of (short)
films to be shown inside the hall or movie theater. By the early 1900s,
they began to feature illustrations of a scene from each individual film
or an array of overlaid images from several scenes.
El Cadáver Exquisito explores the psyche of an individual reflecting a multitu...

In my body you search the mountain for the sun buried in it's forest.
In your body I search for the boat adrift in the middle of the night.

Exactly as in a musical score, it is impossible to understand myth as a continous sequence.

-There are four elements that make up the foundation of my
memories and of my present, that is to say, of me. They gave birth to
and laced themselves through all the situations that mold my life.
Two
of them arrived at the same time, while I was still a child: my
mother's garden and my father's library. I remember the first one
deeply, like a cloudy horizon. A forest of roses, with stems that
reached to the sky. And the second one, lumin...

2010 Film Festival poster, artwork by Signe Baumane, animator
The fine arts have always had a solemn embrace with the art of film since the days of silent movies. As the "art form of the 20th century" began to cement its reputation in the first two decades, artists (many with a surreal bent) experimented with the new form of moving image to give kinetic motion to their individual visions. Salvador Dali, Fernand Leger, El Lisitsky, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Strand and others collaborated with budding film artistes to expand the...

Cain is a military scientist, bitterly disappointed in human race. His conclusion is that the mankind failed to create a world worth living in. Only a small minority of privileged people live in prosperity, while the rest are spending their lives in pain and hopeless struggle to survive. One day, Cain made a decision to wipe out the entire human race from planet Earth, by activating the weapons of mass destruction.
