A remote mental institution next to the Russian border was shut down by the police in the early 70´s. Dr. Andersson made series of snuff films using his patients. The Doctor filmed all the murders in 8mm and started to call himself the Auteur.
30 years later a small American film crew has arrived to Finland to shoot a horror movie about the massacre. The movie’s director, Steven, is engaged in his first feature with his DoP Darius and gaffer Mike from LA. The leading actress is a Finnish rising star Lisa, who’s dreaming about Hollywood. Dr. Andersson is played by a famous B-movie actor with a big ego.
Everything is going according to plan until two Finnish sound guys discover something evil hidden in the basement: the original snuff films shot by the Auteur.
Steven is stimulated by the raw and brutal snuff film material and starts to rewrite the script. The scenes are not real enough. Everything changes when he finds The Auteur’s 8mm film camera. Now he is ready to shoot his masterpiece, the film for which he will be remembered.
Soon the crew realizes that they are the stars of the film. Instead of making a horror film, they are in one. The Auteur is slaying the Skeleton Crew one by one. There´s no sequel for you!

SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009More thoughts on CannesThe experience in Cannes was a crash course in European travel and learning how to navigate a high profile film festival with a lot of restricted access. I feel that in a lot of respects I got to do a lot and had access to more than most first time Cannes Festival goers. For this I am grateful. Currently I am in Rome reflecting on my experiences, the festival, and the people I have met. I will be adding to the blog as ideas, memories, and thoughts c...

The Competition feature Map of the Sounds of Tokyo by Spanish director Isabel Coixet tells a story of love and vengeance in the Japanese megacity. Coixet recalls the genesis of her film: "Films, like tunes or poems, spring from strange encounters, from odd associations that can be completely incongruent but full of magic. In the case of Map of the Sounds of Tokyo, I “saw” the story (I don’t want to sound like some kind of visionary, but this i...

I had a leisurely breakfast, chatting with a producer also staying at the college. Then I spent an hour packing my duffel bag to ship back to Cambodia and deciding what to carry with me for the rest of the trip. I decided to pay the $10 Euros for a taxi to the Palais.
TNT is the sponsoring shipping company, so I trolleyed my duffel bag to the counter inside the market. It weighed in at 20 kilos - perfect! I told them the day before it might be 30 kilos, which they said would be fine for t...

Twelve years after his Best Screenplay award for Ice Storm, Ang Lee returns to the Croisette to present Taking Woodstock in Competition. It refers, of course, to the famed three days of love, peace, mud, and music which took place in 1969. The feature, which screens In Competition today at Cannes, is the story of a torrid passion within a threesome composed of two men and a beautiful woman. “The Godmother” is a feature documentary that takes an intimate look at the life of Fred Gorski a.k.a. Rain Storm and his cosmetic gender transformation salon Fairplay. Located in suburban Staten Island, Fairplay offers men a safe haven where even the most unlikely crossdressers can express themselves without fear of reprisals.
A former Drag performer, licensed hairdresser and cosmetologist Rain founded Fairplay after the tragic loss of his long time partner left him heavily in debt and with his once thriving hair salon in financial ruin. Armed with left over wigs, beauty supplies and closets full of clothes Fairplay evolved from offering basic services to crafting full fantasy worlds.
The documentary film “The Godmother” offers a unique glimpse inside this world where men find relief from the demands of their everyday lives by donning extensive female accoutrements. Here the lines of gender and sexuality are blurred in absolute contrast to the surrounding status quo where gender is anything but fluid.
