About the Director:

Justin read books, made phone calls, and asked questions. At 23, with only ambition, he began shooting his first feature. He was green but he still managed to put together a cast and crew and put the word out to the media - “ It was his attitude and drive which inspired me.”, said Dan Guachionne, sound department from KATE AND LEOPOLD and SPIN CITY. This was his first lesson in filmmaking.
To gain as much experience in the business as he could, Justin auditioned and landed the lead role in Brandon David’s feature film, KING MIDAS. After premiering at the Woodstock Film Festival, KING MIDAS was picked up for distribution and went straight to DVD. Justin continued to learned aspects of production, acting, directing, and networking from the markets and festivals. This opened the door for Morales to shoot a 16mm short, ACHILLES HEART. Justin worked on the Manhattan production of Stephen Daldry’s, THE HOURS. Seven years later, and miles of experience under his belt, Justin formed a production company and shot “FOREVER”, a 16mm film set in the Bronx, New York. FOREVER was released on DVD in 2003. Since the production, he has acted in the feature film SIX FIGURES, which was released in 2004. From 2005 - 2007 Justin worked with documentary filmmaker, Harvey Hubbell V, a 4 time Emmy winning producer/director, on his feature documentary, DISLECKSIA: THE MOVIE. He was also hired by HBO to tape and edit a live comedy show. With this experience he is now driven to tell stories of truth and human nature. In late 2007 Justin and his partner Mike Esasky formed Cool Hand Pictures, LLC, a full service media production company.

Film synopsis:
We pass by them everyday on the subway. Sometimes we drop a dollar. Sometimes we stop and listen. But who are these anonymous musicians that play their hearts out day in and day out for little recognition? BUSKING THE SYSTEM is a documentary that explores the world of subway musicians living and performing in New York City. For in-depth perspective, BUSKING THE SYSTEM focuses in on the very different lives of several subway musicians in New York City. BTS follows three fresh faced musicians from Kansas City, MO, Seattle, WA and Cleveland, OH on their journey to see if they can make it in the New York subway and launch their career – will they discover success or be obscured in failure? Another musician already in New York is seen actually making a name for him self as a subway performer. There is also the familiar darker story of a man who plays strictly as a means for survival. From inspiring idealism to heartbreaking reality, BUSKING THE SYSTEM finally puts a spotlight on the musicians that make up the sounds of the underground.
