Pacific Meridian — just like in the movies!

A film is a very special idea: the crew and actors come together for a couple of weeks or months to create a unique world that disappears after the production is over. Vladivostok International Film Festival Pacific Meridian has its own rules of production, just like a film does.

The opening sequence drives the audience in

Vladivostok International Film Festival Pacific Meridian began its history in 2003 and immediately became one of the most exciting cinema-events forAsia-Pacific region. Over the past ten years over a thousand films were shown for more than two hundred thousand spectators. Annually festival is held under the patronage of the Governor of the Primorsky Territory and with the support of the Ministry of the Culture of Russian Federation. In 2013 the 11th edition of «Pacific Meridian» will be held and the festival will take a step forward to a new decade.

Let the atmosphere be a character in the film

Vladivostok is 9288 km away from Moscow. The cultures of East and West intertwine here in Vladivostok during one of the warmest and pleasant months, September when the International Film Festival Pacific Meridian is held. Vladivostok then becomes a real cinema-city: everyone here is talking about the movies and you can easily meet your favorite actor walking around the city.

Multiple plots — one idea

One of the main goals of the Vladivostok Film Festival is the development of cultural exchange between Asia-Pacific countries and showcasing movies of the Asia-Pacific region. Film enthusiasts will be able to see the latest Asian and European films as well as the most recent works of Russian filmmakers.

Pacific Meridian is art in all its styles. During the festival visitors and citizens of Vladivostok might accidentally walk in on the exhibition of fashion historian Alexander Vasilyev, or find a leisurely master class of a wise master Otar Iosseliani. Like any major international film festival Pacific Meridian has a free educational program for film enthusiasts comprised of lectures, workshops, seminars, roundtable discussions — there’s something for everyone.

Another long-standing tradition of Vladivostok International Film Festival is the project " Cinetour " when famous Russian actors travel around the Primorsky Territory, and citizens of the most distant corners of the Primorye have an opportunity to meet their favorite actors and watch good movies. This is how Pacific Meridian expands its borders.

Prepare to capture the audience’s attention

Over the years world-famous actors and directors visited Pacific Meridian. Among them were Commissioner Cattani — Michele Placido, the star of «Cabaret» Liza Minnelli, «Cyrano de Bergerac» Gerard Depardieu, «Umbrellas of Cherbourg» lead actress Catherine Deneuve, famous Korean director Kim Ki-Duk (some of films have been screened at the festival).
Rock Brynner, son of the famous Hollywood actor Yul Brynner, is a frequent guest of the Festival. «I couldn’t even dream that Vladivostok would become my beloved second home. But I’ve been here fifteen times since 2003 and Vladik is truly home town» — Rock wrote in a book about his father.

It’s impossible to imagine Pacific Meridian without Russian movie stars: Lyudmila Gurchenko, Oleg Tabakov, Nikita Mikhalkov, Pavel Lungin, Sergei Bodrov, Kirill Serebrennikov, Andrei Smirnov and Cyril Razlogov (program director of the Moscow International Film Festival, film critic), who was a senior consultant of the first edition of Pacific Meridian.

The film expresses the vision of the director

You need a strong director to make this «film» shape: set up the artistic concept, approve the scenery and special effects, identify features of the film, find the actors and the visual style. This year Yefim Zvenyatsky — People’s Artist of Russia and Artistic Director of the M.Gorky Primorsky Territory Academic Theatre — is a «director-producer» and General Director of the Festival. Yefim Zvenyatsky (the General Director of the festival in 2003–2005) still wants you to fall in love with our city, just like he wants to fall in love with your movie.

You are the lead actor in your film

The main motto of «Pacific Meridian» — «Films for everybody, films for every one!» — defines the very essence of the festival. Cinema is a reflexion of the day: many film plots echo the events of our lives transferring them to unexpected circumstances, help to learn the culture of other countries and peoples. So let’s discover new filmmakers, and, of course, watch movies!
