The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), founded in 1993, is China’s only non-specialized competitive international film festival accredited by FIAPF.
China’s film industry is growing rapidly as the entertainment industry becomes truly globalized. SIFF devotes itself to building up an international platform with four main programs including Competition, SIFF Mart, SIFFORUM, and International Film Panorama. Its aim is to promote the development of China’s film industry and enhance cooperation with the rest of the world.
Supported by the booming economy and rising international status, Chinese film has drawn attention from around the world for its role in lifting the country’s soft power. Every June, the Shanghai International Film Festival is a must-see event for filmmakers and has enhanced its reputation for presenting a multicultural film fair.
Competition
The competition section includes the prestigious Golden Goblet Award, Asian New Talent Award and MOBILE SIFF award for international shorts. All invite film veterans to join the jury panel.
The Golden Goblet Award, as the main competition section, demonstrates SIFF’s reputation and influence. Those on the jury panel are respected film makers from around the world. The Asian New Talent Award aims at finding the most promising talents and inspiring their creativity. The MOBILE SIFF presents the new comers a different but unique opporutnity approaching their dream.
In 2013, the festival’s influence is growing with 1,655 films from 112 countries and regions signing up for the Golden Goblet Award, the Asian New Talent Award and the film panorama while the MOBILE SIFF received 2064 titles from 104 countries and regions.
SIFF Mart
Since 2012, SIFF Mart was reconstructed, having two sections of SIFF Market and SIFF Project. The SIFF project intergrated China Film Pitch and Catch (CFPC) and Co-production Film Pitch and Catch (Co-FPC).
SIFF Market is the most professional film trade platform in China. Every year, it involves international producers, distributors and buyers.
In 2013, there were 819 organizations and companies participating in the Film Market, 42% of which comes from the rest of the world. SIFF Market 2013 also had the participation of 2,718 buyers from 106 countries and regions.
SIFF Project was equally successful this year. It received 244 applications, eight of which were short-listed for CFPC, and 21 for Co-FPC. These 29 projects attracted 735 buyers and eventually found their business partners after495 one-on-one meetings, thus proving the effectiveness of SIFF as a richly resourced co-operation forum.
SIFFORUM
Following the principle of “Chinese Way and World’s Value”, SIFFORUM serves the whole industry and is the most important communication platform. The SIFFORUM has four parts: President Lecture, Keynote Seminar, Round Table and Master Class. It is not only a platform but also leads the industry.
In 2013, SIFFORUM invited nearly 100 industry leaders from home and abroad in 10 seminars. With a focus on various parts of the industry chain, this year’s SIFFORUM gave special attention to the growth of China’s film market and the relationship between creative power and the market. SIFFORUM became an arena of sparkling opinions with no empty seatsthank to contributions from the following:famous directors – Tom Hopper, Oliver Stone, Hark Tsui, Johnnie To, He Ping, Li Shaohong, and Zhang Yuan; successful new directors - Xu Zheng, Xue Xiaolu and Charlie Yeung; youngwriter Guo Jingming; Chinese film producers – Shi Nansun, William Kong, Lieh Li, Wang Zhongjun, Wang Zhonglei, Yu Dong, Wang Changtian, Zhang Zhao, Ye Yu and Qin Hong; former President of the Academy Awards Sid Ganis; and new media and investment elites Gong Yu, Liu Chun, Zhu Yunlai and Wang Ran,.
International Film Panorama
The International Film Panorama includes categories such as Official Selection, Tribute to Masters, Gala Screening, Focus China, Global Village, Forum Film, Spectrum, 3D, IMAX, MIDA documentary and shorts. The films presented in these sections are diversified in style and provide an opportunity to inform both the public and the media about the latest in world cinema.
During the 16th SIFF in 2013, there were more than 800 films screened in 26 cinemas. They attracted more than 300,000 movie goers, achieving an average attendance rate of over 80%. There are even 139 screens having full attendance. More than 100 various kinds of film exhibitions and meetings were organized and were received enthusiastically by the audience.
The SIFF 2013 also attracted 1,376 registered journalists from 421 media companies worldwide. Having received special attention from such domestic mainstream media as CCTV, SMG, sina, QQ, sohu, and 163, it also has the considerable coverage from renowned film magazines as The Hollywood Reporter,Variety, Screen, and Film Business Asia.
