What would you do when your own conscience that goes by the name of Jimmy the trickster makes you earn money using a miraculous app called LIFT that sets you on an ethereal journey where you'll overcome your own ego, find true love and finally realize your dream?
LIFT is raw and unpredictable. It screams to find itself in this world, like a newborn child whose mother's womb can no longer supply. It comes out of its own will to survive and live; its matter is uncontrollable, a creation of its self, it must be and it has to reach.
I wrote LIFT in a week and it was one of those scripts that screamed to come out of me. Nothing was forced and thought of, it simply wrote itself onto the script. In the beginning we tried to raise money, but all in vein and...

Ghode Ko Jalebi Khilane Le Ja Riya Hoon, Review: Escapist dreamscapes
When translated, the title becomes Taking the Horse to Eat Jalebis, jalebi being an Indian sweet preparation. This is one of the longest film titles in recent times, in the tradition of yesteryear movies like Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) and Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad (1967).
Ghode Ko Jalebi Khilane Le Ja Riya Hoon (GKJK...

Not many movies can move at a sedated pace without putting the majority of the audience to sleep. Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man on Earth is the rare exception. The film flows like the still waters of the San Francisco Bay, by telling a melancholic story of gentrification and the pain that losing a childhood home brings. It is a beautiful depiction of poverty and class struggle that teaches those who have not personally experienced gentrification, what it feels like to be backed into a ...
As a Chinese-American filmmaker myself, there is a special place in my heart for Chinese-American film. The consistently negative depictions of Asians in American film-culture instilled a sense of shame in me that translated to hiding the fact that I was Asian from many people up until early adulthood. Being mixed, that was generally not too difficult and it was an easier way to navigate life. The only way to truly fix this problem is by people like Lulu Wang succeeding. She absolutely does so...
In a festival full of artistically layered and creatively structured films, Abe Forsythe’s Little Monsters stands out by telling a classic three-act narrative with predictable beats that lead to an ending we’ve all seen before. Usually, that would not be a compliment in my book, however, this film executes it’s ‘save the cat’ style story to perfection. It gives the audience everything they want in a film. It is chock-full of humor that has the crowd boisterous thr...

Sarvam Thalam Mayam (Omnipresence of Rhythm) is inconsistent but watchable
Music is the theme of this Tamil film, which is being released with English sub-titles. Once you have chosen music as your subject, endless possibilities exist: Indian, Western, classical, Carnatic, Hindustani, instrumental, pop, rhythm-percussion, strings, wood, brass, and more. Writer -director Rajiv Menon zeroes in on the Guru-Shishya parampara (teacher-student tradition) as the core, and then weaves a story around ...
Well, they can’t all be good. Koko-Di-Koko-Da is a film that was so intriguing on paper that it was one of the first films I actively secured a ticket for. It’s a Swedish horror flick that tracks the brutal process of grief and the damage it does to a relationship. At best, the films absurdities serve as a metaphor for this sentiment. At worst, the absurdities merely serve as aesthetic pageantry to keep the viewer awake.
Essentially, it is a cheaply made horror film with a groundh...
