Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Snobs

My goodness its cold here - I feel like I'm in the North Pole. I personally hate this weather, in fact mid-Wales was the coldest place in the UK at the weekend; -17 on Saturday night...

Anyway, what this means though is that those old cinemas with no air con are nice and warm and whilst I was in Glasgow on business at the weekend I had some free time to chill and watch a film in one of these types of cinemas. I had the choice between Unstoppable and Machete. You'd probably think that I'd have picked the latter but I'm saving that film for when it comes to Aberystwyth in January (a double bill with Saw 3D). Can't wait.

So I picked Unstoppable and went in with the lowest expectations in the world and came out loving every minute of it. It's a cracking film - the pace is excellent and the acting fantastic. I really was impressed and could go and see it all over again tomorrow. When I got back to the hotel I logged on to The Guardian on-line to see what they made of it and to my surprise it got 1 star?? I perceived this as Tony Scott being back on form and one of the highlights to brighten up this cold horrid Winter and snowy UK streets. 1 star?

I've come to the conclusion that broadsheet critics are far far too snobby nowadays and have lost the enthusiasm for escapist films. It might not be perfect but its pure exhilarating cinema which deserves 4 stars. The pattern I've noticed recently is that magazines along the lines of Empire etc give these kinds of films 4 stars whereas broadsheets have no sense of fun. I wonder if the latter have lost the passion for cinema and aren't taking into account how other audiences might react to the 'escapist' film. All I shall say to them is - go on enjoy it - you know you want to!
