Sally Kirkland, 2013 winner of Best Actress in a Short, with Steve Sturla

Q. This year marks the second year of the Studio City Film Festival.  How big was the learning curve?

A. Big. But we prepared a long time leading up to the 2013 Festival, so thankfully were able to pull off a successful festival. We screened 80 shorts and features in six days. We received extremely positive responses from filmmakers and audience members, so that was an encouraging sign that we must be doing something right.

Q. Were there any second thoughts about coming back for another year?

A. Not at all. We have a great venue and have had great support from the local communities of Studio City and Sherman Oaks. Eventually, as we grow, will look to add even more venues. The Studio City Film Festival is going to be around for a long time.

Q. Any particular kind of genre that your festival prefers?

A. We embrace diversity, films that are cutting edge and/or socially or culturally significant. But above all, they must be able to tell a story! I think sometimes filmmakers forget that the script is the most important element. And we love comedy.

Q. What were some of your favorite moments from the 2013 festival?

A. There were so many, but I think my favorite part of the festival was getting to know so many talented filmmakers. And the 2014 festival promises to be even more exciting. We are getting some outstanding submissions from all over the world.

Festival director Steve Sturla with Hall of Fame Basketball Player and Coach Bill Sharman, who passed away in October. Just an incredibly nice man.
