INTERFILM 39 will take place 14 - 19 November 2023
After the festival opening on November 14, 2023, INTERFILM will show over 300 short films in 50 programs from over 60 countries at 10 Berlin venues. In addition to competitions and special programs, the program includes several major events. Here is a selection.
Special guests: Soda Jerk!
The artist duo Soda Jerk, founded in Sydney in 2002 and based in New York since 2012, were most recently celebrated at this year's Berlinale and are showing their two spectacular mid-length main works and two older shorts at INTERFILM. Their high-speed sampling is as breathtaking and hilarious as it is ingenious! The politicization of images is addressed with documentary impetus: The films reveal how images spread, who gains from them and how they can be cast in a new light. Due to the use of unauthorized material, they can only be shown at festivals. And so the siblings travel to festivals all over the world. Both SODA JERK screenings at INTERFILM will be accompanied by a cosy chat and Q&A with their long-time supporter Bartholomew Sammut (Founder XPOSED Queer Film Festival Berlin, Programme Manager Berlinale-Panorama, TEDDY Award Coordinator).
Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, Terror Nullius is a 54-minute political revenge fable. It hitches a ride into the dark heart of Australia, to apocalyptic desert camps and where bicentenary celebrations of the colony are ravaged by carnivorous sheep. Working against official nationalist mythologies, the feature film remix has been called "one of the best Australian films of the decade" by The Guardian, a "dizzying, ambitiously satirical work".

Hello Dankness satirizes the psychotropic spectacle of American politics from 2016 to 2021 in hundreds of film samples. The film follows a neighborhood through these years in the guise of a suburban stoner musical. Consensus reality dissolves into conspiracies and other contagions. Hotdogs debate the culture wars, dumpsters preach QAnon, zombies gather for revolution and real-life events are recast as Broadway smash hits from Cats, Les Miserables, Annie and The Phantom of the Opera. There is singing and dancing, moments of menace and melancholy, shitposting and deep sincerity.

Virtual Reality Meets Fulldome
In the domed hall of the Zeiss-Großplanetarium, "Virtual Reality Meets Fulldome" is held for the 8th time: films designed for VR headsets are projected onto the "Hall of the Night Sky", allowing for an unobstructed and epic viewing experience. The boundaries between digital and real worlds are blurred, and the VR program aligns with the impact of the unique location of the fulldome of the Zeiss-Großplanetarium: 6 elaborately produced animations, documentaries and experimental films not only open up a wide field of vision, but also a collective cinematic experience.

eject_XXVI – The Long Night of Weird Shorts
26th edition of EJECT, the Long Night of Weird Shorts at the Volksbühne! 21 bizarre short films enter the ring to be celebrated and reviled in an interactive cinematic extravagaza where the audience is the jury. The wayward masterpieces compete in blocks, favourites are filtered out and in the end there is ONE way-out winner. Folke Renken & Ludmila Pogodina are the clashing hosts of the madness and at the end of the night the exhausted, euphoric audience can dance till they drop at the Weird Eject Party in the Unterfilm Clubkino!

Sound & Vision
Eight highly diverse music acts performing new compositions to visually arresting films: live at the Volksbühne! These musicians have yet to hear the original soundtracks for the films that were specifically selected from the current festival program, so as not to influence their own creative connection to the works during the composition process. 8 films accompanied by 8 acts with a total of 15 musicians, in a tight and intense live show with phenomenal sound and the epic screen at the Volksbühne. Afterwards, the audience is invited to party into the night at the Grand Festival Party at the Unterfilm Clubkino from 11 pm. Everyone's welcome!

Have you always dreamt of lending your voice to your favourite movie stars, adding a slightly different touch to your favorite scene or simply bringing your native dialect to Hollywood? You can do all this and so much more during this evening in the cosy-glamour of the Roter Salon. Expect an eclectic mix of iconic scenes that are begging to be transformed in front of a live, supportive audience.

In collaboration with 25p, we present the new Local Heroes competition: a brand-new selection of films up to ten minutes that were produced in Berlin and Brandenburg and will be screened, discussed and awarded prizes in front of an audience and a jury of experts. All in one evening, in one event, in one go! Filmmakers from the region can network here and receive direct feedback from industry professionals for their projects. And with a bit of luck, there's even a grant from 25p worth 2,500 euros. It's not to be missed!
