SCI-FI-LONDON GEEK WEEKENDER: EXPERIMENT STARTS ON 3rd – 5th NOVEMBER

UK: London, TUESDAY 17th October 2017 – Today, the people behind the SCI-FI-LONDON FILM FESTIVAL launch a pop-up weekend event that will run from the 3rd until the 5th November 2017 at EXP Leisure (www.expleisure.com), London’s largest venue permanently dedicated to gaming –  video games, board games and virtual reality.

SCI-FI-LONDON: EXPERIMENT delivers three days of amazing film, live music, immersive experiences, game tournaments and all kinds of new technology and more.

Some of the highlights include:

MUSIC
Electronic duo INTELLIGENTSIA and tape-loop warriors HOWLROUND, bring some live aural pleasures to the event.  We also have DJ sets and soundscapes around the venue.

GAMING
With ‘all the consoles’, VR and dozens of LAN PCs on hand we will have tournaments with titles like Mario-Kart, Overwatch, Bloody Zombies and Mortal Kombat X and many more.

We also launch two brand-new table-top games.   A deck-building card zombie card game called LAST ONE IN and a super-cool board game for a post-trump generation called EVIL CORP

WORKSHOPS & TALKS
Cyberdog founder, Vincent C. J. Jö – Nés, who has been exhibited at Tate Modern, the Art Institute of Chicago, Harrods of London and even been into outer space with Astronaut Mae Jemison in 1992 aboard the NASA Space Shuttle Endeavour, will run a junk ‘up-cycling’ workshop.

Nate Crowley, discusses his new book: 100 Best Video Games (That Never Existed),
After rashly tweeting he would dream up an imaginary computer game for every 'like' received, Nate found himself on an epic quest to conjure up hundreds of entirely fictional titles.

VFX expert, HaZ' Dulull, discusses his new features THE BEYOND and ORIGIN UNKNOWN, starring Katie Sackhoff.  After years of working on major Hollywood FX movies, Haz makes the move to writer/director.

The Life of the background artist.  Hear from some real ‘extras’ about their appearances in major films like STAR WARS and how you can work as a film extra.

COMEDY

We present the world premiere of a new web series called GALAXY BALL, with the cast on hand. This brand new sci-fi sitcom is created by award-winning comedian Diane Spencer

There is also some excellent stand-up comedy from Richard Sandling’s Perfect Movie.  A film based live show which he has performed at festivals all over the world including Edinburgh Fringe, Bestival, Latitude, MCM Expo and Boston Comic Con.

FILM

The film programme has highlights from the festival and includes:

CRUMBS an Ethiopian post-apocalyptic surreal sci-fi feature length film, written and directed by Miguel Llansó, starring Daniel Tadesse.  Believing himself to be an alien-like Superman, diminutive, hunch-backed Candy (Tadesse) goes on a quest of self-discovery, while his pregnant lover Sayat (Selam Tesfayie) must contend with a black Santa Claus living, magical realist-style, beneath the abandoned bowling alley where they have settled.  Crumbs is an odd Afrofuturist odyssey that rebuilds the family of tomorrow from the discarded crumbs of today. It is a long way.  One of those ICYMI films that was one of our curated films at the recent INTO THE UNKNOWN exhibition at the Barbican.

EMBERS is another film we curated for the Barbican exhibition and was also winner of the BEST FILM award at the festival in 2016. The world as we know it is forgotten. A decade after a global epidemic, those who remain suffer from effects of the virus - retrograde and anterograde amnesia. The survivors navigate a decaying landscape, unable to recall the past or create new memories. Five interwoven stories each explore a different facet of life without memory in a future that has no past.

FLORA is a brilliant début for director Sasha Louis Vukovic, whose excellent cast deliver a refreshing take on the ‘monster-in-the-woods’ canon. Set in the spring of 1929 near the end of a golden age of exploration, an expedition of Ivy League University Botanists enter an uncharted forest on the North American frontier. Tasked to study the native flora, the students unearth a deadly organism and are soon in a fight with nature itself.

NEIL STRYKER AND THE TYRANT OF TIME Directed by Rob Taylor and starring David Ogden Stiers, Rob Taylor and Walter Koenig, this is a cult film in the making. Set in a future time, Neil Stryker is a hardened Elite Forces agent famous for hunting and capturing his former mentor and villainous time-traveller, ‘The Mad Scientist’. Following a magnificent escape, the Mad Scientist rains down chaos on the city in a quest for revenge. Stryker must now race through time and do battle with goblins, robots, and ten-foot killer penguins in order to save the world and rescue his son from the clutches of his infamous former mentor. This sci-fi/comedy feature is a 1980s throwback where every set, every effect, every puppet was crafted by dedicated artists, some of whom might get time off for good behaviour!

SPACE DETECTIVE directed by Antonio Llapur featuring galactic gangsters, interstellar visuals and an out of this world soundtrack and dry wit in vast amounts - this is not to be missed!

There will be lots of brilliant short films and some sneak previews of things coming for 2018!
