Roger Durling recalls his debut and quoted Ernest Hemingway from "A Farewell to Arms" A beautiful quote Roger loves! “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Photo Credit - Getty Images for SBIFF &n...

VIDEO: Power of Story: Pushing Boundaries Panel
In contemplating the complexities of the world, we have always looked to artists and storytellers to challenge our thinking and shake us from complacency. That’s particularly true of fiercely independent artists who maintain the freedom to shatter prevailing orthodoxies, reframe moral perspectives, and push the boundaries of accepted norms. They don’t lead us to safety but away from it, out of our comfort zones. We’re joined by a group of exceptional, provocative filmmakers a...

"Marshall from Detroit" - A Review of the VR experience at Sundance
Eminem is one of the greatest rappers to ever exist. Sway Calloway is the best hip-hop journalist and radio personality in the world. The two come together to have a patient conversation about some of Eminem's roots in Detroit, utilizing a medium that usually gets attributed to a modern aesthetic. However, with Eminem and Sway Calloway being such rich fixtures of hip-hop history, the aesthetic is grainy and has a vintage feel to it. The 20 minute short is a VR experience that...

"Velvet Buzzsaw" - strong satire on the world of fine art, a netflix premiere in Sundance
“Critique is so limiting and emotionally draining.” - Morf Vandewalt Uninspired, a total lack of originality, derivative, void of spiritual awareness. These are only a few of the harsh critiques that Gyllenhaal fires off as he moves briskly from scene to scene, emoting in such a way that we have not seen from the Nightcrawler actor. Dan Gilroy and Jake Gyllenhaal reunite for a brutally comedic satire on the world of fine art. They cover art’s destruc...

"Koko-Di-Koko-Da" - Review
Well, they can’t all be good. Koko-Di-Koko-Da is a film that was so intriguing on paper that it was one of the first films I actively secured a ticket for. It’s a Swedish horror flick that tracks the brutal process of grief and the damage it does to a relationship. At best, the films absurdities serve as a metaphor for this sentiment. At worst, the absurdities merely serve as aesthetic pageantry to keep the viewer awake. Essentially, it is a cheaply made horror film with a groundh...
"The Report" - Review from Sundance
The Report, directed by Scott Z. Burns, has everything that Hollywood loves; A-list male leads in Adam Driver and Jon Hamm, it's based on a true story, it's political, it’s relevant and it’s made by a proven director. Similar films like Argo and Spotlight have enjoyed massive success in both the box office and critically, and I don't see The Report being any different. The film follows Daniel Jones, played by Adam Driver, as he spends half a decade building a report o...
The Park Ave Trail
Park Avenue is the spine of Sundance. Essentially you can take park avenue from one end to the other and travel between the two most important segments of the festival. On the north side of Park Ave, you can easily find the festival headquarters which happens to be right across the street from Eccles which houses many of the major premiers. From there, you can head South down Park ave which takes you past New frontier exhibits, The Ray, Prospector Square and many more venues as well as Fresh M...
Merch in Park City!
Welp, I didn't get into any screenings this morning so I spent my time exploring the festival grounds. One of my stops was at the Festival Store where they have an assortment of fun souvenirs to bring home. This year's theme is 'Risk.' So all merch is centered around that theme. It's certainly a powerful theme for the thousands of filmmakers that risk their lively hood to get their independent films onto the silver screen. Prices are not bad either. Posters, t-shirts...
"Ms. Purple" - Review from Sundance
Unique, relatable, tragic yet hopeful. Truly, this was a simple film that was well crafted, blending powerful storytelling with gorgeous cinematography, as it paints LA's Koreatown in such a way that has not really been done before. The story is about a beautiful, once promising, young Korean girl struggling in Los Angeles, supporting her terminally ill father by means of a salacious profession. The call to action occurs as her father's caretaker quits, forcing her to reach out to...
"After the Wedding" - Review from Sundance
This film is everything you should expect by now from a film starring Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams. Every scene with them both in it has an energy not many could match. The emotional restraint in Williams' performance forces the audience to quiver while Moore's erratic and abusive behavior steers a ship that is stuck in a storm. Abby Quinn delivers a show-stopping performance as a daughter caught between her parents lies. She may be the most slept-on aspect of the show. No...

IFFR offered a Masterclass with french director Claire Denis
With her unflinching, sensitive films, Claire Denis is among the most important European film authors of this generation. Since she made her debut in 1988 with Chocolat, inspired by her youth in West Africa, the colonial heritage and invisible lines that divide us from others are recurring themes in powerful films including Beau travail and White Material. Her exceptionally versatile oeuvre moves freely between poetic minimalism and more conventional drama, but also includ...

Berlinale 2019 - Goodbye Dieter Preview By Alex Deleon
By Alex Deleon for <filmfestivals.com> The 69th edition of the Berlin Film Festival will be the last one under the auspices of director Dieter Kosslick, who has run the event since 2002 with a certain flamboyance and an occasional flub. Inevitably seen in the company of the big Hollywood stars while sporting various floppy hats Kosslick has been accused of catering too much to the Hollywood mainstream at the expense of the festival's long established ...

THE CREEPY LINE a film by M.A.Taylor 2018
"A film that Google does not want you to see - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"
An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.
The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”
However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”.
Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.
There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.
