in ‘Hats Off’ an extraordinary documentary that talks about the life of Mimi Weddell. A woman well past her prime – if age is a factor – but whose surviving spirit keeps pushing in her acting career and life.

Director Jyll Johnstone follows Mimi Weddell over the course of 10 years to bring onto the screen all of the eccentricities of this extraordinary woman. The approach is candid and unapologetic because whatever is in Mimi’s mind will be said as it is. After all this iconic New York actress has no time to make apologies for the way she thinks and feels about her essence and acting career that began at age 65.

"Capping a Carreer" New York Post Review of Hats off

JYLL Johnstone's irresistible "Hats Off" documents Mimi Weddell, a Manhat tanite who, at 93, has pretty much cornered the market playing elegant, very old ladies in movies, TV, commercials and print ads.
Mimi's career began at age 65 after her husband died suddenly without insurance. She starred in a horror movie, and the now-frail, bone-thin Mayflower descendant has worked tirelessly since then, including a bit as Sanford's mother in "Sex and the City."

"If people slow down now, I want to kick them," says Weddell, whose relentlessly upbeat manner masks considerable anger, as both of her long-suffering adult children attest.

Weddell's daughter and granddaughter share a cluttered apartment with her and her collection of hundreds of vintage hats, which are as much Weddell's trademark as a cigarette holder for this quintessential New York character.

Running time: 84 minutes. Not rated (profanity). At the Quad, 13th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
