Cinema From Chile Comes To New YorkMonday, November 5-----------CINEMA CHILE, a survey of contemporary films from the South American nation, comes to New York for an unprecedented survey of the trends, talents and templates of the next wave of Chilean film. The program will screen from Friday, November 9 to Thursday, November 15 at the Quad Cinema, one of New York's most adventurous art-house cinemas, located in the heart of Greenwich Village. CINEMA CHILE is a co-production between ProChile, the Chilean Trade Commission, through its Film and Photo Commission: FilmChile, and CorpArtes, the Chilean arts foundation responsible for producing the Santiago International Film Festival (SANFIC). CorpArtes-SANFIC, in association with Cinema Tropical, a non-profit media arts organization dedicated to the distribution, programming and promotion of Latin American Cinema in the United States, has curated the Festival’s program, selecting an array of top Chilean films including selections from SANFIC3, held in August in Santiago, Chile. The series kicks off on Thursday evening with a special Press and Industry Screening of the most celebrated Chilean (or South American) film of the past few years, EN LA CAMA (In Bed), a co-production between Chile and Germany, written and directed by Matias Bize (who will attend the screening and be present for a question and answer session afterwards). The Special Event will be held at the Landmark Sunshine Theater in Manhattan's bohemian Lower East Side, preceded by a cocktail reception. EN LA CAMA received its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival and won the Golden Spike Award at the Valladolid Film Festival (Spain), as well as being nominated for Best Latin Film for the Ariel Awards (the Mexican Oscar) and the Goya Awards (the Spanish Oscar). Lead actress Blanca Lewin won Best Actress honors at the Palm Springs Film Festival, as well as the Chilean Arts and Entertainment Awards (the Chilean Oscars). The film has been theatrically released in South America and Europe, and is in negotiations for a deal with a North American distributor.nema The series showcases the different genres and filmmaking styles of the new generation of Chilean film talents, with films raging from gripping dramas (SE ARRIENDA/FOR RENT) to crowd-pleasing comedies (MI MEJOR ENEMIGO/MY BEST ENEMY) to compelling documentaries (LA HIJA DEL GENERAL/THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER and ÜXUF XIPAY / EL DESPOJO/THE PLUNDER). The festival also includes a one-week engagement of the much-awarded and highly acclaimed family drama LA SAGRADA FAMILIA by Sebastián Lelio, and a program of short films showcasing Chile's next generation of promising talents. The program also includes a sidebar of four classic feature films that celebrate some of Chile's most acclaimed international auteurs, including Alejandro Jodorowsky, Patricio Guzmán, Miguel Littin and Silvio Caiozzi. As Chile has emerged in the past decade from under the political repression of the Pinochet government, it has experienced a true flowering of the arts, including the art of the moving image. A generation of young filmmakers have ventured into uncharted territory both aesthetically and thematically. Trying to find more accurate narratives that reconcile the turmoil of the country’s past with the complex and intricate nuances of the present, these directors are creating a new international image of their country and its place in South America and the world. CINEMA CHILE offers adventurous New York film buffs a rare and satisfying opportunity to experience this revolution in the making and to see some of the most exciting and accomplished films being created anywhere.
