Teddy Berlinale "Bears " for G&L films

19th Teddy awards during Berlinale
February 18, 2005

At the Berlinale, films with gay, lesbian or transgender content have always been an integral component of all its sections. A nine-member TEDDY Jury views the works and selects the TEDDY-winners for best short film, feature film and documentary / essay film.

Every year some 40 films from the different sections of the Berlinale compete for the three TEDDY awards. This year’s film programme and screening schedule will be announced on February 1 at the Berlinale’s press conference and then go online at www.berlinale.de – all films relevant to the TEDDY will also be listed at our website www.teddyaward.org.
The continuity in the field of queer filmmaking has again become evident - new works by five previous TEDDY-winners are running in this year’s programme: by Jacques Martineau and Olivier Ducastel (“Drôle de Felix”, 2000), Jennie Livingston (“Paris is burning”, 1991), Jochen Hick (“Ich kenn keinen – Allein unter Heteros”, 2003), Rosa von Praunheim (“Silence=Death & Positiv”, 1990) and two-time TEDDY-winner Constantinos Giannaris (“Trojans”, 1990 / “Caught Looking”, 1992).

The Jury
The independent TEDDY Jury consists of nine organizers of queer film festival programmes from all over the world. Under the direction of Jury President Michael Kutza, founder of the Chicago International Film Festival, representatives of both long and newly established festivals will choose this year’s winning films. For the first time, the Czech Republic is on the jury with Ales Rumpel from Prague’s “Mezipatra Festival”, as is Argentina with Gaby Waisman, director of the new “Diversa Festival” from Buenos Aires. Germany is represented by Cologne’s women’s film festival “Feminale” and the “Queerfilm” festival from Bremen.

The Awards
The cash prizes are as follows:
TEDDY for Best Short Film: 3,000 euros, donated by “Berliner Pilsner“ and TEDDY e.V.
TEDDY for Best Documentary/Essay Film: 3000 euros‚ donated by the gay-lesbian organization elledorado e. V., Berlin
