Dear Friend of The Silent Film Festival,

The 14th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival is just a couple days away and we hope to see you there!

The weekend begins and ends with the radiant Lupe Vélez - you won't want to miss the rare chance to see her in two glorious films on the big screen!

On Opening Night, the Douglas Fairbanks/ Vélez adventure The Gaucho will be accompanied by a new score by The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra written expressly for us.

As a Spanish cabaret chanteuse, in our delightful Closing Night film Lady of the Pavements, Vélez is a pawn in a pygmalion-like ruse and captures the unsuspecting heart of a Prussian aristocrat (William Boyd – future “Hopalong Cassidy” star).
Film Historian and SFSFF friend Russell Merritt (with the help of musician Donald Sosin, Library of Congress, and other archives) has been behind the recovery of three of the six songs that were originally recorded for the film including Irving Berlin's "Where is the Song of Songs for Me?"
Our screening of Lady of the Pavements will be the first time the film has ever been presented with three of the original songs performed live!

Throughout the festival there will be an impressive line up of authors and special guests to sign books. Between the films, be sure to visit Books Inc. on the Castro mezzanine to peruse their inspiring array of books. Please visit our website to see a schedule of author signings.

Our complete festival program is listed below. Please note that some of the short films which accompany features have changed.

See you on Friday!

Warm Regards,
Stacey, Anita, Jeremy, and Jesse

THE SILENT FILM PRESERVATION FELLOWSHIP
This fellowship was inaugurated in 2008 as an outgrowth of our commitment to film preservation. In collaboration with George Eastman Hose's L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation, a recent graduate is invited to San Francisco to restore a rare short film or selected film footage at Monaco Digital Film Labs. The fellow then returns to the Festival the following year to attend the world premiere of the preserved film.

SFSFF CO-PRESENTATION
3rd i South Asian Independent Film presents
Snakes, Sirens and Vamps: A Short History of Early Indian Cinema
A talk illustrated with clips, by Anupama Kapse
(Live musical accompaniment for select clips)

Co-presented with The San Francisco Silent Film Festival

Friday, July 24 at 7:30pm
Mission Cultural Center, 2868 Mission Street, San Francisco
$8 (Tickets at the door only)

3rd i is proud to bring you this opportunity, as part of its Speaker Series, to see rare excerpts from some of the earliest films from the subcontinent, including: India's film pioneer, D.G. Phalke's Kaliya Mardan (1919), about the exploits of a young Krishna; Gallant Hearts (1931), an adventure-romance modeled after The Thief of Baghdad (1924); films from the legendary Bombay Talkies studio; and early sound films like Achut Kanya (1936) and Aadmi (1939).

Anupama Kapse will provide an introduction to each film, and lead us through a short history of early Indian cinema, from the silent era into the arrival of sound on the Indian filmscape. Anupama will be joining Queens College as Assistant Professor, Media Studies this fall. Her doctoral thesis, The Moving Image: Melodrama and Early Cinema in India, 1913-1947 examines the genres of Indian silent cinema through a melodramatic lens.
