The Media, Film and Television Association of Macau will hold from December 26, 2009 to January 2, 2010 (eight days), the first "Macau International Film Festival and International Film, TV, Animation Trade Fair."

works with the advantages of a convergence of eastern and western cultures, focusing on finding and displaying the world's best films. In encouraging the diversification of the film, television and animation industry at the same time, and nurturing the local Macau film, television and animation producers with new capital to build a platform for integrating a multitude of diverse projects, we must build this first-class film festival from an international perspective. By bringing together international film, television and animation producers, investors, directors and actors as well as the political and business elite we will motivate to great enthusiasm all of the people involved.

During the Movie Festival, the "Film, television and animation product Trade Fair" and associated activities will enable the provision of professional representative services at Macau's international movie and television content copyright license trading bazaar. Through the exquisitely curated movie screenings and a variety of supporting activities combined with Macao's tourism resources and entertainment attractions, we'll be creating for the world's finest filmmakers and the general public to enjoy with us a great big party!

Let the "Macau International Film Festival" be forever established as one of Macau's unique cultural characteristics, highlighting the quality and unique charm of Macau. -An opportunity for many international guests to gather, exchange, collaborate, and be entertained!

Opening Ceremony of the Macau International Film Festival

I have been present at the ceremony. The event had the participation of a local Portuguese group of dancers, choirs from local schools and the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra, who enlivened the evening with some great movie soundtracks. However, the movie clips shown on the screen during the orchestra's performance made a mockery of the music played. They consisted of badly cut and edited portions of some of the most ridiculous and meaningless scenes of the movies which will be screened during the festival. I have friends among the performers and they said the Mr Xu Chao Ping, chairman of the Movie Television Media Association of Macau, under the excuse of lack of budget, refused to pay any fee to the artists but, at the same time, he used them to fulfill his own purposes. I also have heard from the conductor of the orchestra that he was the only artist paid. However he was so embarrassed with the whole situation that he decided to share his fee with the orchestra to pay the instrument's transportation and a dinner for the musicians. Incredible! It seems that this people from MTM are a bunch of amateurs trying to make good money at the expenses of the Macau citizens. Even the VIP guests (supposedly famous actors and movie directors from China and Japan) did not respect them. After receiving their souvenirs they flew away before the end of the show leaving the front rows almost empty. It was a sad view. Nevertheless, I have a word of praise for the performers, especially for the Girls Choir and the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra. They were the real attraction of the evening as they entertained the audience with some great tunes, performing soundtracks from famous movies such as Gone With the Wind, Breakfast at Tiffany's and west Side Story. It was really great and most enjoyable. Although they are non-professional groups, they have shown a much greater deal of professionalism than the organizers who are supposedly professionals.
