"The Hurt Locker" (the Iraq War drama) won best picture and five other prizes at the Academy Awards, including best director for Kathryn Bigelow.
Bigelow is the first woman in the Oscars history to receive Best Director award.
"It's the moment of a lifetime," she said. "I hope I'm the first of many," she said afterward backstage.
"The Hurt Locker" won best picture in a year where there were 10 nominees instead of the usual five - an effort to include more commercial, popular movies in the mix. The historical Box Office sucess of Avatar did not impress the members too much who gave the film a 3 technical awards.
For once the winners themselves were pretty predictable and the insiders got it quite right (we were among those who predicted the success of The Hurt Locker against Avatar, but does Avatar needs oscar fuel to build more Box Office?)
Nicolas Chartier,the french producer of The Hurt Locker, was banned from the ceremony, he was accused of sending email to Academy Members inviting them to vote for his film, againts Avatar.
His statue was handed to him after the ceremony.
