David Lynch’s Son Launches Kickstarter Campain for narrative “Gray House”

Indiewire has exclusively learned that filmmaker and painter Austin Lynch, son to David, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance his latest project “Gray House,” a hybrid drama that interweaves both documentary and narrative footage to frame a “conversation about nature, identity, consumerism and progress” (per the release). Lynch is looking for $25,000 to help fund his feature.

Lynch worked with his father and filmmaker Jason S. on the Webby Award-winning series “Interview Project,” and has also directed a 10-part documentary chronicling the production of Terrence Malick’s “The New World,” and “Making ‘There Will Be Blood,’” a film about the making of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar-winning epic.

In “Gray House,” Lynch investigates five politically and socially charged locations where he either conducts a series of interviews with the local residents or stages scripted scenes in the environment. Among the characters that populate the film: a bait fisherman on the Texas coast, oil workers in North Dakota, a couple living on a commune, and inmates at a women’s prison in rural Virginia.

“The idea for ‘Gray House’ began with my interest in these locations,” Lynch explained. “As the project evolved I decided to approach each space in a unique way and to create a film that incorporated both documentary and narrative footage. The film is about the affects of architecture on its inhabitants and the ways that our understanding of reality can be complicated by its representation.”

The film’s scripted sequences star Aurore Clemente (“Paris, Texas”), fashion designer Jeremy Scott, Nathaniel Brown (“Enter the Void”), and painter Dianna Molzan. Music is by Cameron Reed, who recorded two electronic albums on Warp Records under the pseudonym Babe Rainbow.
