Thailand at the Cannes International Film Festival 2023The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce, Royal Thai Government is to host Thai Night Cannes 2023 “Thailand Where Films Come Alive” at the Cannes International Film Festival on May 20, 2023 to celebrate the remarkable growth of the Thai entertainment industry and its potential to reach new heights.
This year, subtitled “Thailand Transformed”, Thai Night will be presided by Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi and attended by Mr. Keerati Rushchano, Permanent Secretary for the Royal Thai Ministry of Commerce, title along with other senior officers and distinguished members of the film and entertainment industry. The event will be the occasion to share Thailand’s accomplishments with the global entertainment community and foster new opportunities for international cooperation.
The Thai film industry has shown extraordinary resilience during the COVID outbreak, staying open for business while some other have been forced into lockdowns. Now that the pandemic is behind us, the trend has only accelerated.
Thai content is becoming increasingly more popular around the world, and Thai Night will offer the opportunity for international film executives and creators to mingle with leading Thai film professionals and explore the many opportunities offered by Thailand’s entertainment rise.
Thai night and the Marche du Film will be the occasion for the DITP to showcase 10 forward-looking Thai film companies: Benetone Films, Brandthink, Film Frame Production, GDH, Halo Productions, Kantana, M Pictures, Right Beyond, Sahamongkol Film International and Yggdrazil Group.
Beyond content, Thailand demonstrates its growing potential as a filming destination. An increasing number of high-profile international productions have chosen Thailand as their filming destination. Among the latest projects to locate their production in the Land of Smiles are Godzilla and Rogue One’s director Gareth Edwards’ upcoming sci-fi thriller “True Love” for 20th Century Studios, Netflix’s “Thai Cave Rescue”, Paramount+’s “The Blue”, HBO’s “The Sympathizer” and the upcoming season of “The White Lotus”.
In 2022, according to the Thailand Film Office (TFO), the country hosted 348 film and TV productions, with total production spent of $182M, the highest level ever.
The attractiveness of Thailand is due to its unique combination of natural assets, skills, talent pool, infrastructure and film-friendly policies. In March this year, the Thai government announced a doubling of the cap on its production incentive to THB150M ($4.4M) and, even more significantly, an increase in the incentive to 30% of qualifying expenditures.
From May 16 to May 24, 2023, parties interested in meeting with Thai entertainment companies or acquiring Thai content can visit the DITP booth located at N.22.01, Palais -1 inside the Marché du Film at Palais des Festivals.
