Together with his climbing partners, Fred Roux and Köbi Reichen, he drove through 13 countries in an attempt to climb K2 (8611 m) in the Karakorum mountain range. As the so-called “Butcher of Vilnius”, the former Austrian SS officer set up, organized and ruled the Vilna Ghetto from 1941 to 1943 and gained sad notoriety for being a sadist who showed special cruelty towards the Jewish population. Different survivors of the Shoah testify, hoping to effect justice, but in the centers of power, the desire to bring eventual closure to this dark chapter of the country’s history seems to outweigh the desire for justice.
