Submit your shorts to Busho Budapest Short Film Festival

 About BuSho
BuSho (Budapest Short) was established in the autumn of 2004 by a group of young Hungarian filmmakers and the first event successfully ran its course the following year. The festival became an international breakthrough in an exceptionally short period of time: we got 360 individual entries from 45 countries in 2009.
We had plenty of festival screenings, selections of film academys, feature films, conferences, film-, and all-art workshops in the program.

 BuSho 2012 Apolcalypse Now!
The BuSho's website has gone through a major improvement and been re-vamped.

Registration is now open for BuSho International Shortfilm Festival 2012!
From this year we can only accept shorts that are registered through our online system except if a studio, school or workshop enters 5 or more shorts, they can send them in on DVD form. Despite the crisis we'd like to carry on with projects we started up over the years: 8th BuSho, 6th GomBuSho workshop, 4th LifeAd one-minute short competition and wish to have a second spot competition with poster topic too!

 Call For Entries Deadline:
Our main target group is the generation of developing young filmmakers but we are very delighted at every entry. You can enter in three categories: fiction, animation and experimental.Deadline: April 30. www.busho.hu

 BUSHO presentation
The festival was born to give the more and more thriving short film-society a scene the introduce itself, and to give young titans the possibility to prove their talent in an international field. We invite every year filmmakers and leaders from the filmmaking workshops in order to offer these communities a lucid and pleasurable being together, promoting at the same time the knowing of each other's values. Beyond the outings of individual filmmakers we had screenings of the winners of international filmfestivals and a conference negotiating the situation and the possibilities of co-operation of young European filmmakers. We offer European youngsters one chance to know the alternatives of cooperation and of safeguarding and exercising their interests.

Our mission is to develop the cultural identity of the audiovisual sector of Eastern and Central Europe. Following the second festival we passed a 6-hour selection of Hungarian short films to 30 European festivals, which unburdens the getting into the market of young European professionals and the promotion and distribution of the screened European films. In the long term we would like to make up Central-Eastern-European selections and convey them to other participants of the audiovisual sector which could strengthen cooperation among European festivals.

The main organizer (the Foundation) is a non-governmental organization, and so is the major part of its co-operating partners, so the collaboration between the non-profit sector and cultural institutions is essential to have the project succeded. The essence of this success is to motivate common activity among young inland filmmakers and other European organizations taking part in the audiovisual program. We would like to give young European filmmakers a fair show to introduce and realize themselves in order to create a new common European value in which the supranational dimension is given by the participant countries.

Since the cessation of festivals you can see international short films once in a blue moon, because they are not screened neither at cinemas or at television broadcastings. So we would like to show the shorts shot in the preceding years, giving the viewers a chance to see these works. At the Oscar-nomination of the animation film entitled Maestro - which was given two prizes at BuSho - everybody was very suspenseful, at the end the outcoming winner was not accompanyed by so much attendance. If somebody was interested which film was to beat „Maestro" in such a hard battle could see „The Danish Poet" at the first evening of the following BuSho festival.

The festival is free for the public right from the start, accomodation and full board are provided for the international professional scientists and filmmakers and for the staff taking part in the organization. The main target audience of the international festival is the upcoming young generation of filmmakers, but we are open to entries in 3 categories (experimental, fiction and animation.)
We have screenings in 3 halls (competition program, information screenings, festival selections) among the traditional confines and full house of the competition program seems to certify us. Concerning the overall influence on the audience we have the buzz that they start to believe that we need this here in Hungary, because this kind of short film festival was missing.

After the screenings the international jury gives a consultation and evaluating conversation involving filmmakers and enquierers to motivate both individual filmmakers and teams to go on with their job and provide them with useful advises concerning their professional growth. During the parade we have some professional debates, some of them are public, so anybody can have an insight into the background of European film relations and cooperation possibilities.

The program is one-of-a-kind Hungary, because this is the only festival in Hungary which screens exclusively short films. The international response is bigger and bigger every year, the number of artist and workshops telling their intent to take part in the event is continuosly growing. We emphasise the accompanying programs, too, we have international Folk, Etno and world music concerts, exhibitions and performances. We screen every evening a feature film, with English subtitles.

 IMPRESSIONS, FEEDBACKS, SPECIAL THANKS
„In the flood of festivals I took part of one just recently that sticks out of the others by being capable to cover all warm family atmosphere and high standard, international program. We all know the charm of those small festivals that was done by low budget, high enthusiasm and a few film lovers' extreme amount of work. It feels good to be there and to participate in - both makers and spectators can feel that the movie they made or they watch is someone's matter of the heart and is important to.
We also know those ones overwhelmed by sponsorship and owing to this by lacking of real spectators they become a salon and partying venue showing a wide selection of films - or thought to be films. But there are very few festivals that fulfill both requirements. Busho does. Home-made cuisine mixed with 'haute cuisine'. One may think this is not a big deal. A piece of cake to get it done. They are wrong. A chain reaction of  decisions lead to a successfully organized festival that an outsider can barely get into. Small margins but the final result is totally different. Try to copy that!"
Ildikó Enyedi, director

„A oll ker, BuSho was a fantastic experience - the people, the films, the city, the baths, all wonderful days.
The atmoshpere throughout the festival was great, it was brilliant talking about the films we watched with the filmmakers, digging into the heart of the art of making short film, sharing stories, motivations, inspirations - talking politics, culture, language, about our histories and our futures. I will look forward to seeing you again at BuSho, or in Cornwall or at other festivals in the future...Köszönöm BuSho Festival :-)
Oll an gwella"
Denzil Monk , Director, awen productions cic

"...a national festival on a European level"
Csaba Bollók, director

„Busho 2009 was Bigshow. More films, better films, more viewers, better reviews, more foreign visitors, better side program, more personal interchange, better connections. BUT this is the Busho norm. This happens every year. The big question is were will it go next year ? Busho became so mature that it cries out for a big step. Watch out for Busho 2010 - I am it will surprise us!"
Wolfgang Leis , jury

"...We had a much easier task than today's young filmmakers, because the cinemas projected shorts before every feature film. Today there are only advertisements between two films... It is difficult to find partners, because there's no business in it... Therefore, festivals like BuSho accomplish a great mission which establish a contact between creators and audience..."
István Szabó, Oscar-winner director

"I am very happy that this festival exists because we have missed it till now. We missed an international short film festival in Hungary ."
András Muhi, producer

"It's a professional festival, organized with dedication, by Tamas and his friends. It's full of energy and power, without them many young filmmakers would not have the opportunities to find their viewers."
Przemek Mlynczyk, former jury member

"As I was sitting in the audience during the festival, I thought to myself: finally, a real international festival in Hungary! International in content and in proficiency..."
Géza M. Tóth, Oscar-nominated director

„BUSHO is the evidence of the „raison d`étre" of the short film. The films from all around the world proved, that in many subjects, in colour or in black and white, dramatically or with humor, in only a few minutes directors can show georgeous films..."
Éva Kis-Bocz , former jury member
