Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Is Grinch 2018 any different from its previous versions?

As we get closer to the biggest event in the movies industry – the Oscar Awards Ceremony, more and more blockbusters shake our imagination with bright posters and adverts inviting to witness bright effects, cool ideas and new roles of the well-known actors (or at least discover the new sound of their voices behind cartoon characters).

This fall has already brought a set of remakes. Seems like their producers either ran out of ideas or want to resurrect the beloved stories for the reasons known to them only.

The Grinch animated movie is among those. From November 9th, we will have a chance to see how the new masterpiece is different from his previous versions. And if you are the minions’ fan or can recite the Dispicable Me characters, The Grinch was made especially for you!

The story is well-known – the Grinch and his dog, Max, live a lonely life in a cave on Mount Crumpet. Grinch becomes really mad when the whole neighborhood starts to celebrate Christmas and seems pretty happy with the holiday season. So, when the Whos decide to make Christmas even cooler, the wrathful Grinch sees the only way to bring silence into his existence. He makes an insidious plan to pretend Santa Claus and steal Christmas (with help of his buddy Max, of course). He has no doubt that this will make the whole neighborhood quite forever. Will he succeed? Time to find out!

Those who are not fond of cartoons and would rather experience goosebumps from top to bottom can watch another spinoff, this time of a horror movie – Halloween. Although this sequel does not depict the same story told in 1978, it is still scary and probably the best one of the series.

Can’t help mentioning another remake which touched thousands of hearts around the globe. And this is a story of a cute little bear Winnie-the-Pooh and his grown-up friend Christopher Robin who is now married and lives in London. Winnie-the-Pooh appears all of a sudden and the two friends go on a journey to find the rest of the folks - Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, and Roo. Once they are together again, they decide to help Christopher Robin to feel the joy of life again.

Critics say this is not the best remake of a well-known story ever. Oh well. What is more interesting is that the spinoff was banned in China. The country’s authorities found a political connotation in the cartoon – the “bear of very little brain” was compared to the country’s president Xi Jinping after a set of posts on the Chinese social media site Weibo. Imagine how disappointed the viewers were by not having the chance to enjoy the prolongation of AA Milne’s story.

Anyway, Oscar’s date is quickly approaching. Looking forward to many more new movies and modern versions of the well-known stories.
