Big Mike Craft at The Saratoga Race Track and Harness Track

The summer in upstate New York is as nice as any place in the World. We call them August Nights. The day's at the track are usually hot and humid. The nights go down in the low 70's and high 60's. It  is a nice time of the year. The Polo matches are exciting and well run by Jim Rossi and Mike Bucci. I'm still waiting for their mystery Hotel to be built, but I like them both. When I show up at polo, I am treated as a gentleman. The food is always good and the Staff is wonderful. I like Polo and use to be a member before it went public, on all sides of the field. The Flat track, as many of you know is 140 years old this year, but the trouble is that it looks as if General Grant helped paint it. The track should be kept original but original means painting it. I love Saratoga Race Track and hope to enjoy another season. My father was a Supreme Court Reporter, and a partner in the Firm of Solomon, Kirwin, and Craft from 1952 until his retirement in 1979 at the age of 69. My father also worked for Meyer Lansky and took me to the races as a child. Children were not encouraged in those day's, but when you can control the outcome of any trial, as my father could, you do as you like. He took me to the trotters (harness) always, and much more than the Flats. When I was a child, The Flat season only lasted 28 days in August. It has expanded 2 weeks in the last 2 Decades. When my father was a young man, Arnold Rothstein had a hand in the Casino's of Saratoga, but could not compete with Mr. Luciano and Meyer Lansky. It was in the late 40's that my father met Meyer Lansky. The Casino's were in their last Tango in Paris (last 6 years) and The Governor wanted them Closed. My Dad worked for Workmans Comp. in State Government and had access to administrative Hearings of the Day. He was the stenographer. He was a close friend of Earnie Morris and all the people around Harness racing and made a living betting fixed races. It was at the Harness that he met Meyer. The two got along, even though my father drank and Meyer drank seldom. My Dad was a good race companion. Long story turns short, Meyer called his man in the Catskills, VAN HAVER, the political boss and Meyers man in the Resort Mountains of N.Y. and Ulster County. Meyer had my father appointed to the Supreme Court of N.Y. in Ulster County and the Albany Political Boss Dan O'Connell got a man in Ulster, and My father appointment was traded to Albany County. That was the way it was in those day's. Meyer got his own man in the Supreme Court System and I got a father who liked the horses. My Dad was a good provider, and was a pretty good horse bettor. When Doc Farone came for me at the age of 19, in the suburbs, it was because Meyer sent him. I got $500.00 per week to learn the ropes, plus I worked as a nite-club doorman at the Frat House in Albany N.Y., a place I would buy only 8 years later with money from the rackets and my being Meyer Lansky's Last Enforcer. This summer, in Saratoga N.Y., at the Polo Club, The Harness Track, and The Famous Flat Track, I hope to film a wonderful story of my young years leading up to the contracts on Pierre Trudeau of Canada, Fidel Castro of Cuba, and ex-President Richard Nixon of the USA. The hard talks by myself and my underlings will be filmed and I hope my son Michael can play me! I am going to ask Laila Ali to play a staring female roll. Her Publicist Howard Braggman does not approve of me so I will wait and see her reaction. The Film is going to be shot ,Shotgun style with 4 camera's. It is the sound that worries me. We are not going to clean out the Track sounds. I will need a top sound man. Hay, any investors out there want to go in business with bigmikecraft. See you all later, and have a good weekend, Sincereky bigmikecraft.com
