SECOND “MOLODIST” IFF PRESS CONFERENCE

 

< “Molodist” IFF’s selection panel chose the first five movies to enter the International full-length film competition:

- The Golden Cage / La jaula de oro, dir. Diego Quemada-Díez, Mexico (winner of the “Certain Talent” prize at the “Un certain regard” program of the Cannes Film Festival);

- The Weight of Elephants, dir. Daniel Joseph Borgman, New Zealand/Denmark/Sweden (participant of the Berlinale 2013);

- Nothing Bad Can Happen / Tore tanzt, dir. Katrin Gebbe, Germany (participant of the “Un certain regard” program of the Cannes Film Festival);

- Ilo Ilo, dir. Anthony Chen, Singapore (winner of the Camera d’Or award at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival);

- Talea, dir. Katharina Mückstein, Austria, 2013.

 

 

< As part of the traditional “Festival of the Festivals” program will be presented János Szász’s “The Notebook”, winner of the Grand Prix of the Karlovy Vary IFF, as well as Locarno IFF awardee Albert Serra’s “The Story of My Death”. The program includes two Cannes IFF laureates: “Heli” by Amant Escalante (Best Director award) and Jia Zhangke’s “A Touch of Sin” (Best Screenplay). Festival attendants will also have the opportunity to watch Mira Fornay’s “My Dog Killer”, that won the Tiger Award at Rotterdam IFF, and Călin Peter Netzer’s “Child’s Pose”, the winner of the Golden Bear of the Berlin IFF. “Molodist” will also feature the film by Felix Van Groeningen, “The Broken Circle Breakdown”, which received two Tribeca Film Festival Prizes (Best Screenplay for a Narrative Feature Film and Best Actress in a Narrative Feature Film for Veerle Bartens) and two awards at the Berlinale: Label Europa Cinemas and the “Panorama” Audience Award. The program will as well include the winners of the Venice IFF. 

 

 

< The “Century” retrospective program celebrates the centenary of some iconic figures of world cinema. Stanley Kramer’s 100th birthday will be commemorated with the screening of his “Ship of Fools” (1965). Other films of the retrospective include: Georg Jacoby’s “The Woman of My Dreams” (on the occasion of Marika Rökk’s anniversary, 1944) and “The Young Lions” by Edward Dmytryk (1958) starring Marlon Brando (based on the eponymous novel by Irwin Shaw, celebrating his centenary). On the occasion of Hedy Lamarr’s 100th birthday Gustav Machaty’s “Ecstasy” (1933) will be screened. René Clément’s anniversary will be jubilated with the screening of his “Purple Noon” (1960), the first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley”.

 

< “Sickfuckpeople” by Yuri Rechinsky will be screened as a special even of the festival. It will be the Ukrainian premiere of the film. The film won the “Heart of Sarajevo” Prize in the “Best documentary” section at the Sarajevo IFF.

 

<                Among Molodist spesial events there’s also the double hommage to Alexander Granach, a famous German actor and writer from Ukraine. Angelika Wittlich’s film “Alexander Granach: From the Shtetl to the Stage” and the one where Granach starred, “Ninitchka” by Ernst Lubich.

 

<     The closing film of the IFF Molodist is “The Congress” by Ari Folman. It’s based on Stanislaw Lem’s novel and stars Robin Wright, Paul Giamatti and John Hamm. “The Congress” opened Quinzaine program at the Cannes IFF.
