Molodist International Feature Film Competition program

INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM COMPETITION

12 films from 4 continents will be competing this year in the Molodist International Feature Film Competition  program.

Chosen at  dozens of filmfestivals, these films reflect the current trends in the new cinema and the development of the industry’s professionals.

The Spanish director Diego Quemada-Diez debuts in the competition program with his road-movie "The Golden Cage" (Mexico), in which teenagers from the slums of Guatemala are trying to illegally enter the USA. The film won the prize Un Сertain Talent in the Cannes IFF’s Un Certain Regard program.

Daniel Joseph Borgman’s "The Weight of Elephants" (New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden) is a story of an impressionable 11-year-old Adrian, who meets a crazy, mysterious and wonderful girl Nicole. The film, which has already taken part in Berlinale-2013, is now going to be personally presented by the Danish director to the viewers of Molodist.

"Nothing Bad Can Happen" is a debut film by the German director Katrin Gebbe. The film is about a young Tore, a member of a Christian punk-movement called Jesus Freaks, undergoing tests of faith and his capability to love. The film took part in the Cannes Un Certain Regard program.

The Ukrainian contestant in the feature film program is Dmytro Moyseyev’s "Such Beautiful People". It is a story of five people who escaped from the civilization and are living by the sea. The film will be presented by the director himself, whose short films have more than once taken part in Molodist IFF.

Anthony Chen, the director of the first Singaporean film to win a Cannes award, will come to Kyiv in person to present "Ilo Ilo", his film about a Filipino maid in an unforeseen economic situation. The film won the Camera d’Or award at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.

Another film taking part in the program is "Talea" by the Austrian director Katharina Mückstein, a former student of Michael Haneke. The film depicts a complicated relationship between a 14-year-old Jasmin and her mother, who has just been released from prison.

"Before Snowfall" (Norway, Germany, Kurdistan) is a film about a risky journey from the East to the West, about conflicts between traditional restrictions and the modern western outlook.

Another contestant is "Bluebird" by Lance Edmands (USA, Sweden), a drama about a chance event ruining the peace of a small logging town. The film was nominated for the Chrystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary IFF, winning the Ecumenical Jury Award and the Best Actress Award.

The Slovak director Matyas Prikler will personally introduce his fiction film "Fine, Thanks" – three family stories of the times of the current financial crisis. It was premiered in Rotterdam. In 2010 a short film "Thanks, Fine" which is a part of full-length "Fine, Thanks" was selected for the Cinefondation competition program of the Cannes FF.

The actor and film director Guillaume Gallienne makes a debut with his film "Me, Myself and Mum" (France, Belgium), in which a boy called Guillaume inherits his mother’s manners. At the 2013 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight the film won the Art Cinema Award and the Prix SACD.

"Sarah Prefers Running" by the Canadian director Chloé Robichaud is a film about a student of athletics in Montreal, who gets married but "prefers running above all". The film will be introduced at this year’s Molodist IFF by a cast member, actor Jean-Sébastien Courchesne.

"The Owners" is a debut by Agustin Toscano and Ezequiel Radusky, actors, directors, producers and film writers from Argentina. In the film, a group of workers move into an estate in the North of Argentina, pretending to be the estate’s owners until the daughter of the real owners returns.

Screenings of the international feature film program will take place on October 19-27 in "Kyiv", "Kinopanorama" and "Kyivska Rus" cinemas.
