Global Peace Film Festival

This year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working with our partners to ensure a safe experience for our guests. Our partnering venues are all requiring the use of face masks and are practicing social distancing guidelines set forth by the CDC.

We are doubling down on our values of access, equity, inclusivity, and independence by reimagining the Global Peace Film Festival during these extraordinary times. In addition to limited public screenings, we have expanded the Festival by providing access to those unable or unwilling to travel by offering a series of “Stay-At-Home Docs” and digital Q & A Sessions that can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. While the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge, we’ve also seen it as an opportunity for creative and expansive thinking.

The Global Peace Film Festival is now a single festival expressed locally, globally, in-person and online.

Paul Dano on Wildlife

Paul Dano is an American actor, known for his roles in Little Miss Sunshine, There will be blood, Prisoners, Youth. Wildlife starring Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal is his directorial debut, based on the novel by Richard Ford.  What really spoke to you in this script?    I really wanted to do a film for a long time. And I’m glad it was this book that fell in my hands at the right time. I had read some short stories form the same writer before and I really love...

“Seasons” Filmmaker Jacques Perrin Goes Wild

There’s a moment in Seasons when a bear covers its eyes in distress as two ursine cousins go at one another with a vengeance. It’s one of many heart tugging scenes in Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud’s new wildlife drama that captures empathy and tenderness, anger and aggression and a range of relatable behaviors in between. We can’t help but see a bit of ourselves in the secret lives of non-pets such as antelopes, horses, wolves and lynxes, but also smaller...

Animal Film Festival

In its second year, Animal Film Festival (AFF) is the only global fest of its kind, seeking specifically animal-themed films in every category. AFF is held at a beautiful and state of the art theater in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills in Grass Valley, California. AFF kicks off with an invitation only party the night before the fest - serving delicious catered vegan food and beverages. Filmmakers are provided with free lodging (as available) and VIP treatment throughout the fest. Audience discussions follow films where the filmmakers are present. Each filmmaker receives a gift bag loaded with animal friendly products. Best of all, the films screened at Animal Film Festival go far in changing people's minds and treatment of animals. This is a win win for our audience and animals.

AFF seeks films that bring awareness about the realities animals face in the world today. The stories showcased in documentary, scripted, feature and short films will be engaging, funny, edgy, beautiful and inspirational. The festival seeks to explore topics about companion animals, wildlife, animals in entertainment, farming, and laboratories. We are looking for films that highlight ways our society celebrates our relationships with non humans, as well as films showing the ways we mistreat them. Animal Film Festival aims to not only entertain audiences but to propel people into action to change their own lives as well as the animals effected.

Awards & Prizes

Awards are given in the categories of Feature, Short and Student. The awards last year included a framed certificate listing the filmmaker(s) and the title of their film/category. Each filmmaker also received a gift bag filled with animal friendly products.

SEA THE TRUTH

Director: Claudine Everaert.
After the worldwide success of “Meat the Truth”, which was translated in 13 different languages and released in 16 different countries, the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation has made another documentary, named “Sea the Truth”. The state of our oceans and seas is the main focus in “Sea the Truth”. Leading scientists such as Daniel Pauly suggest that if we continue to catch and eat fish at the current rate, the oceans and seas will be empty within 40 years. The hunt for fish is an economic monster on the run: large bottom trawlers are scraping the bottoms of the seas empty, taking with them all living things with destructive force. The massive amount of bycatch is thrown back into the sea, maimed or dead. Under the guidance of Dutch MP Marianne Thieme, two young marine biologists Marianne and Barbara, are searching worldwide for scientific information about the condition of our biggest ecosystems, which cover more than two thirds of our planet. Underwater photographer Dos Winkel shows them the beauty of marine life and the enormous threats to which it is exposed. For the documentary the producers filmed in Newfoundland, on Bonaire, on the North Sea, the Azores and at various locations in the Netherlands. Authorities offer the solution of sustainable fisheries projects while leading scientists say that every fish that is taken now, is one too many. This documentary shows that, unfortunately, there is no such thing as “sustainable fishing”. “Sea the Truth” premiered on May 19th in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. ~ www.seathetruth.nl ~

A Place Without People

Director: Andreas Apostolidis.
A film about how the local population of Tanzania has been evicted to make way for the creation of the world’s most famous nature reserves. Set in the famous Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater, the film explores how the parks came to be and how western perceptions about nature radically altered both the East African landscape and society. The film focuses on the people who "shouldn't be there", not only because their voices are rarely heard but also because they are still being antagonised and excluded, while the tourist industry is rapidly depleting the area's natural resources.
