Autumn of Route 66 Teaser

Teaser for new feature documentary by director Ester Brym, the Autumn of Route 66

Are All Men Pedophiles?

Director: Jan-Willem Breure.
We live in a society that condemns pedophiles, though biological instinct and world cultures throughout history suggest that an attraction to adolescents is as natural as it is unavoidable. The fashion industry on the one hand sexualizes ever-younger girls while those who act on these instincts are reviled. The apparent hypocrisy at the heart of society forces the question: What do we mean when we talk about Pedophilia? Are All Men Pedophiles?

THE SECRETS OF FORTRESSES OF THE CARIBBEAN

Director: Patrick BAUCELIN.
Forts and fortresses in the Caribbean were the only defense against invasions sometimes English, sometimes French, sometimes of Holland, sometimes Spanish. All known or unknown, in ruins, restored or erecting still proudly turn, all have a story and resonates to their glorious past. Go back in over time with historical detail, the milestones that have marked the history of the Caribbean and anecdotes about the sights of everyone who will make this documentary, a film unavoidable and exciting.

The alternative birth of the Music Video

user
By Robert Barry In April 2005, less than a year before shooting their own debut film Electroma, the French electronic group Daft Punk directed themselves in a video for the song 'Robot Rock', from their third album, Human After All. The video finds Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo in black leather and robot masks performing on a dark, neon-lit stage resembling somewhat the sets for the BBC's flagship pop music show Top of the Pops in the late eighties. Surrounding the stage, a p...

Jocasta

Director: Elise Kermani.
In Sophocles' play "Oedipus Rex" Jocasta hangs herself shortly after finding out that Oedipus is both her husband and son. In Euripides' play "The Phoenician Women", Jocasta stays alive a little bit longer to try and reconcile her sons but stabs herself shortly after they kill each other during the war at Thebes. But in Kermani's film "Jocasta", Jocasta stays alive after her sons' mutual murders to perform a sacrifice to save Thebes, and to satiate Ares' ancient fury of Kadmos' slaying of the dragon. Jocasta chooses the creative act of writing over suicide. Her ritual act remembers that Body is Presence (Plato's 'ousia' and Heidegger's 'Ereignis') and Jocasta reminds us that she (also known as Iocasta) is related to Io, the Great Cow goddess of Egypt. The origins of writing are sacred manifestations of ousia/hestia...esti/Being. She reverses the taboo of incest, and reestablishes the symbollic image of mother and son. Jocasta's sacrifice was inspired by an ancient Persian ritual of ingesting the Word to cure illness. www.elisekermani.com/jocasta.html www.elisekermani.com/thejocastaproject.html

The History...since you asked

#
Where did the Queens World Film Festival come from? For many years, we were volunteers with another festival, running their Youth Initiative providing filmmaking bootcamps to three local schools. The program was very successful with a growing reputation for excelence. Last year, in it's 7th year the festival had grown and more than 400 films entered. We were working very hard on the Youth Initiative when disaster hit. Two days prior to the festival's opening we found out that t...

Cape Cod Over Istanbul

Director: Aydin Erel.
The golden age of aviation coincided with the Great Depression. Although the depression had tremendously negative effect on global economy, two fearless American aviators emerged to take back the long distance record from France. The pilot Russell Boardman was once a cowboy, motorcyclist and a stunt pilot for Hollywood movies. The co-pilot John Polando was an aircraft mechanic with more than 10 years of aeronautical experience; together they found a way to fulfill a lifelong dream.Their Bellanca monoplane” Cape Cod” was literally a flying bomb with the take-off weight consumed two-thirds fuel it trundled down Floyd Bennett airfield in the early morning of July 28, 1931. Boardman and Polando loaded 16 copies of the New York Times on board. These were to be parachuted over various cities as a mean of communicating with the world. They had never flown outside the United States before. Their objective was to fly from New York to Istanbul. It was to be the longest distance ever flown in history. They were unreported from land or sea for two nights and a day. What they lacked in equipment such as radio, parachutes or navigation light was compensated with plenty of determination, resolve and steely courage.

The BIG GUNS by Nesta Morgan

user
TheBIG GUNS   Catching my eye on arrival was the “newest, largest and most powerful of the big guns” - not a producer - but a British 15” naval gun previously mounted on the HMS Ramillies and first seeing action in 1920 during The Greco-Turkish War before firing on the Italian landforces and warships… it could fire a 876kg shell a distance of 29kms… that’s like propelling an equivalent of 10 well proportioned men over The EnglishChannel. This gun ha...

WVMSFF and The historic Warner Theater

user
West Virginia mountaineer short film festival will take place in the historic Warner Theater in downtown Morgantown. Built by the Warner Brothers, H. M., Major Albert, and J.L nearly 80 years ago, this distinguished movie house is reminiscent of the early years of film. It's a perfect venue for screening works that strive to be new, innovative and original, as our festival does. Its historical significance also lends itself to one of the festival's areas of emphasis, exploring regional/Appalac...
