El Cadáver Exquisito

El Cadáver Exquisito by Sombra There are four elements that make up the foundation of my memories and of my present, that is to say, of me. They gave birth to and laced themselves through all the situations that mold my life. Two of them arrived at the same time, while I was still a child: my mother’s garden and my father’s library. I remember the first one deeply; like a cloudy horizon: a forest of roses, with stems that reached to the sky… and the secon...

Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) 2011

The 9th edition of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival will be held from 8-12 December 2011 in Kathmandu - the cultural and cosmopolitan capital of the Himalayan region. Since its birth in 2000, KIMFF has evolved from a festival focusing initially on the Himalaya to one encompassing a wide range of subjects and issues that explore the diverse and complex ways in which human beings relate to mountains. KIMFF seeks to showcase films that attract peer review and critiques that lead to better documentation of mountain issues, particularly of highland regions of the developing world.

About 50 films will be selected for KIMFF 2011. Around 15-20 documentaries will be shortlisted to be viewed by an international jury. Filmmakers can choose whether or not to submit their films for competition. Accepted films not selected for competition will be screened and be eligible for the Audience Award. Films made by Nepali filmmakers will have the opportunity to participate in ‘Nepal Panorama’, a separate showcase of Nepali entries. The objective of ‘Nepal Panoroma’ is to promote Nepali films in all genres.

KIMFF 2011 coincides with Nepal Tourism Year 2011. As part of this effort the festival will feature a special selection of films that have been instrumental in putting Nepal on the world tourism map. Films and activities that celebrate man's spirit for exploration and adventure, will also be part of this edition of the festival.

In the presence of filmmakers, film enthusiasts, critics, scholars, journalists, activists, and mountaineers, the festival will include discussion forums, on-demand screenings, guest lectures, exhibitions of books and photographs celebrating mountains and workshops for aspiring filmmakers.

Piotr: A Mistranslation

Director: Martín Seeger.
Piotr Herroll’s family had to leave Nacrovia and now lives in exile in Santiago de Chile. Young Piotr is sent to find work. A friend points him out that the Chilean State supports artists; so, he comes up with a play about the story of his unknown country. This carries several problems: he must have Chilean actors, who are less concerned about the meaning of his work. Also, his citizenship credentials are not very reliable. And the language barrier will result in a series of mix ups that will end altering the play. The film is spoken in a made up language, Nacrovese. The continuing use of subtitles is incorporated into the plot games, making Piotr Herroll a unpredictable hero and turning the film into a sharp comedy about the essence of the Chilean self.

Burmese Dreaming

#
Director: Timothy Syrota.
A young woman has a nightmare about the killing of her father by soldiers in a mountain village in Burma. She wakes up. She is in a refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border. She has already been here for 6 years but still her mind is not here. Instead, it drifts between the realities of refugee life and dreams and day-dreams about Burma and a life she used to live. She is with her childhood buffalo friend, Zu Zu Ma, she has imaginary conversations with her fishermen friends, and she dreams of the family she used to have. Burmese Dreaming combines a composed musical score with a non-fiction narrative scripted by refugees from Umphiem Mai refugee camp and based on the story of Say Say Lah, a young woman who was imprisoned by the Burmese military at age 5. Footage for Burmese Dreaming has been filmed throughout Burma including areas held by the Karen National Liberation Army, as well as in the refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border. This is the first feature documentary of author, director and international award winning photojournalist Timothy Syrota.
