LAJewish Film Festival -- Curtis to Curtiz and Roth on Roth

with a footnote on Woody Allen by Alex Deleon for <www.filmfestivals.con>   This year's ninth edition of the Los Angeles Jewish Film festival with the cooperation of the widely read Jewish Journal Weekly was better organized than in previous years and had an unusually strong selection of films.  Films are, of course, chosen on the basis of having some connection with Jewishness, director, subject matter, or whatever, and are aimed at a primarily Jewish audience, which can be pretty...

Berlin Film In Focus: WHATSOEVERLY

user
While some people in America may already be nostalgic for George W. Bush (do not count me in that group), one of the guilty pleasures that one could perhaps pine for was the former President’s odd use of the English language. Although he was educated at Harvard, he was prone to colloquialisms that were bad mashups of words that he kind of, sort of just made up. He shares this quality with the lead actor in the new Italian satirical comedy QUALUNQUEMENTE translated as WHATSOEVERL...

CHAMELEON

Director: Krisztina GODA.

Gábor is an office cleaner. Wearing overalls and a baseball hat, he seems insignificant. Working on the night shift, Gábor rarely has any contact with his employers, yet he learns everything about them by thoroughly analyzing their garbage. Since he is almost invisible, nobody suspects that Gábor is, in fact, a con man who carefully chooses his victims by the trash they leave behind. His targets are mostly disillusioned, lonely women. In a few months he destroys all their romantic illusions by taking all their savings. Having an unusually high IQ and an ability to assume various personalities, Gábor is an expert in manipulation. When he gets a job at a psychologist's office, Gábor meets Hanna, an injured dancer who happens to be the daughter of a millionaire. Insecure and vulnerable, Hanna seems to be the perfect victim. Gábor pretends to be a doctor who can cure her body and her soul, an irresistible offer for a desperate woman. Everything goes according to plan until Gábor falls in love with Hanna and has to make a hard decision between her and the money.

When Change becomes Charge, interview from Cannes.Al Gore was invited to Cannes for the premiere of An Inconvenient Truth, his documentary about climate change. “I know this about politics. The political system has one thing in common with the climate system: it too, is non-linear. It can appear to change only gradually. Faith And Film: SILVERDOCS Finds Religion

user
Thursday, June 15----One of the tenets of the American system of governing is a strict separation of church and state. It is very clearly written into our Constitution, and was certainly the intention of our "founding fathers", who had experienced the persecutions of state religions in Europe. This seperation between church doctrine and the rule of law has been scrupulously followed but that wall is definitely crumbling. A number of documentaries premiering at the SILVERDOCS festival this week,...
