Le Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal a dévoilé hier la
programmation complète de sa 40e
édition qui aura lieu du 12 au 23 octobre.
Cette année, plus de 292
films dont 11
premières mondiales, 23 premières
nord-américaines et 10 premières canadiennes, en
provenance de 45
pays, ont été sélectionnés avec le souci d'offrir
le meilleur du cinéma produit dans l’année.

accès à toutes les séances, à l'exception de la soirée d'ouverture
et de clôture, sur le site de La Vitrine.
CARTES
BLANCHES
Pour souligner les 40 ans du Festival, le FNC a demandé à 10
cinéastes, dont les voix se font l’écho de la richesse des films
présentés au Festival depuis 40 ans, de réaliser chacun un court
film sur un sujet libre. Seule contrainte imposée à cet exercice
de style : chaque film doit durer 4 minutes maximum. Ainsi, ont accepté
avec enthousiasme de jouer le jeu de ces Cartes Blanches: Denis Côté, Deco Dawson,
Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier,
Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev et Denis
Villeneuve. Leurs œuvres promettent sans aucun
doute de surprendre!
Ces courts films seront dévoilés aux festivaliers de manière
aléatoire tout au long des 11 jours du Festival mais seront
également disponibles en ligne sur le site du Festival.
OUVERTURE ET
CLÔTURE
La Guerre est
déclarée de Valérie
Donzelli (France) lancera la 40e édition du
Festival le 12
octobre prochain au Cinéma Impérial, en présence de la
réalisatrice et de son producteur Édouard Weil. Le 22 octobre,
Philippe
Falardeau clôturera l'événement avec Monsieur Lazhar (Québec/Canada).
Les deux films ont été sélectionnés pour représenter leur pays
mutuel dans la course à l’Oscar du meilleur film en langue
étrangère.

La Sélection internationale permet aux cinéastes indépendants,
souvent encore méconnus, de se faire valoir parmi une sélection

LOUPS
Du
côté des P’tits loups, le nouveau cinéma pour enfants se fait
toujours plus stimulant, avec au menu des oeuvres différentes et
fascinantes, qui font grandir ! À ne pas manquer, trois programmes
de courts métrages pour la famille, de véritables petits bijoux en
provenance de partout à travers le monde. Après Le ballon vert, Porte
bonheur et
Papier de soi, le camp de cinéma Les P’tits Loups nous
présente cette année Rencontre
du 3e âge, un film sur les échanges
intergénérationnels. Le projet est réalisé collectivement par
les enfants en difficulté du Docteur Julien avec l’appui d’une
équipe professionnelle. Également au programme, le long métrage Émilie Jolie de Francis
Nielsen et Philippe Chatel
(France), d’après le conte musical Émilie Jolie,
de Philippe Chatel, avec les chansons originales interprétées par
Françoise Hardy, Georges Brassens, Julien Clerc et bien d’autres.
Pour les jeunes cinéphiles anglophones, The Flying Machine
de Martin Clapp, Geoff Lindsey et Marek Skrobecki
(Pologne/Royaune-Uni), où la machine volante nous amène sur les
traces du célèbre virtuose Frédéric Chopin. Aussi à découvrir
absolument, la perle rare Tomboy
de Céline Sciamma (France), un film tout en finesse sur les
questions complexes de l’enfance, porté par une distribution de
jeunes acteurs d’exception.

Le FNC Lab explore les interactions entre l’image et le son sous

INSTALLATIONS / PERFORMANCES: l'oeuvre
interactive Full
Moon signée Iregular
(design graphique et illustration par Baillat Cardell & fils)
sera présentée sur la promenade des Artistes du Quartier des
spectacles. Côté performance, Jürgen Reble et Thomas Köner (Allemagne)
présenteront Materia
Obscura, un voyage onirique fait de «
chimiogrammes » en 16mm; Zapruder
Filmmakersgroup (Italie) nous livrera SPELL, une
performance en deux temps : The
Hypnotist Dog (film en 3D) et Suite (concert
pour table de ping-pong hyperamplifié); et le duo néerlandais Optical Machines
(Pays-Bas) jouera d'un instrument audiovisuel machinique.
- FILMS: une
sélection de courts et longs métrages expérimentaux d'avant-garde
seront présentés en salle, avec en première mondiale Six Mil Antennas
de Johnny
Ranger, film 360 degrés projeté dans la Satosphère
de la Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT).

Le
rendez-vous des professionnels
Le
FNC Pro se consolide en une série de trois jours consécutifs les 17, 18 et 19 octobre,
à l'Agora Hydro-Québec du Cœur des sciences de l'UQÀM
afin de créer un rendez-vous plus concentré et propice aux échanges
et rencontres entre professionnels de tous les milieux du cinéma et
des médias. Cette section regroupe l'ensemble des conférences,
tables-rondes, panels, études de cas, ateliers, pitches et
cocktails de réseautage.
Thématiques des 3 journées :
- 17 octobre : Télévision / grand écran / Web: terrains
d'entente
- 18 octobre: L'écran social. La collaboration est-elle
possible?

ÉVÉNEMENTS
Le Quartier général du Festival accueillera encore cette année
et ce tous les soirs des événements plus que festifs. Le vendredi
12 octobre dès 22h30, les célébrations de la 40e édition
débuteront lors d’une première nuit au royaume de la Louve. Les
musiques de Why
Alex, Why? et de Vincent Lemieux enflammeront
les festivaliers et donneront le ton aux 10 nuits d’événements
spéciaux. Le 13 octobre, on lance le deuxième album du groupe Duchess Says
« In a Fung Day T » tandis que le 14, les jeunes des Premières
Nations nous invitent à découvrir leurs tout derniers films lors
du grand lancement international du Wapikoni mobile.
Le samedi 15 seront présentés les courts métrages des jeunes du projet LOVE,
suivi de la première édition d’Inside
Brain, une rencontre audacieuse sur le thème de la
maladie mentale appuyée d’un extrait de « Maudite folle » premier
roman de Varda Étienne interprété par Bénédicte Décary. Plus
tard dans la soirée, on vous présente une oeuvre du réalisateur Khoa Lê s’inspirant
de l’imaginaire du designer Denis
Gagnon. La soirée se termine par l’événement
spécial présenté par Écorce
Atelier créatif : la Fête de louveteaux avec Mike Simonetti,
chef de file du label Italians Do It better.
Les événements se poursuivent tout au long de la semaine avec
entre autres, la première montréalaise du documentaire Better Than Something
de Jay
Reatard ; la 13e édition de Cours écrire ton court;
une soirée en pleine nature avec le National Parks Project formé
de 52 artistes ayant composés et enregistrés des pièces dans les
parcs du Canada ; le très beau Nuit #1 de la réalisatrice
Anne Émond présenté lors d’une soirée habillée par la
formation Claass
incluant deux des membres de We Are Wolves.
Pour terminer, le samedi 22 octobre, la très grande nuit suivra la
première du long métrage Monsieur
Lazhar du cinéaste québécois Philippe Falardeau.
Les DJ
Archibald Singleton, Alix, Panton et Matteo Grondini se
relayeront jusqu’aux petites heures du matin et clôtureront les 10
nuits du festival. De plus, soulignons un événement tout spécial
pour le monde de la danse! Ora
de Philippe Baylaucq, premier film en thermographie 3D,
accompagnera un autre grand film en 3D : Pina de
Wim Wenders. Expérience sensorielle inédite, c’est la danse
transfigurée par le cinéma. Philippe Baylaucq et Wim Wenders
présenteront leurs films le 13 octobre.

Yesterday, Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma was revealing the complete programming of
its 40th edition, which will be held October 12 to 23, 2011.
This year’s edition features over 292 carefully selected,
cream-of-the- crop films
— including 11
world premieres, 23 North American premieres and 10 Canadian
premieres —
from 45 countries. As always, the FNC celebrates
established filmmakers and emerging talent without distinction.
It’s a party for everyone!
As of today, get the PASS
FNC (access to all films except opening and closing
film) at a
reduced rate on La Vitrine

BLANCHES
For its 40th anniversary, the Festival asked 10 filmmakers whose
work has been screened at previous editions over the past 40 years,
to each direct a short film on the subject of their choice. The
only limit on this creative exercise: each film had to last a
maximum of four minutes. The filmmakers who enthusiastically signed
up for the Cartes Blanches experience are: Denis Côté, Deco Dawson,
Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier,
Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev and Denis Villeneuve.
We’re in for a real treat!
The shorts will be presented one by one, in random order,
throughout the 11 days of the Festival and can also be viewed
online at the Festival website.
OPENING
AND CLOSING
The 40th edition of the FNC kicks off on October 12, with Declaration of War by Valérie Donzelli
(France), with the
director and her producer Edouard Weil in attendance.
On October 22, Monsieur
Lazhar (Quebec/Canada) by Philippe Falardeau
will close the Festival, with
the director in attendance.
Both films were selected to represent their country at the Oscars
for Best Foreign Language Film.

SHORT FILMS
In competition for the Loup argenté, 35 films from across the
globe. Organized into six programs (Pour l'amour du genre, Fantômes, Voyage,
Mystère, Magie and
Liberté), 35 standout films that show the full appeal
of new cinema (Harmony
Korine, Spike Jonze, the Brothers Quay) and those
worth getting to know, along with gems from here (Mathieu Tremblay, Nicolas
Roy, Pedro Pires, Serge Clément) and those from
abroad (Walerian
Borowczyk). Often defying classification, these
films are a taste of things to come. Did I say “bizarre”? How
bizarre!
In competition for the Focus award, 31 Quebec and Canadian films
shatter our accepted beliefs. In addition to the films already
mentioned, three programs showcase today’s distinctive voices.
Festival regulars (Vanya
Rose, André Turpin, who is co-directing a film with
Louise
Archambault and Stéphane Crète, and Nancy Baric),
and promising newcomers (Sophie
Goyette, Chloé
Robichaud, and Daniel Karolewicz) come
together in a joyful cacophony.

year, the Festival is paying a tribute to Amos Gitaï with
a series in three parts including a retrospective, the video
installation Traces
and a master class with
the Israeli director in attendance; Emmanuelle Demoris
with Mafrouza,
a monumental five-part documentary shot during the two years she
spent in the Egyptian shantytown (round-table discussion with the director in
attendance, as well as Isabelle
Lavigne and Richard Brouillette); Asghar Farhadi, with A Separation (Special

fête du feu (2006) and À propos d'Elly (2009); the Association coopérative de

WEE WOLVES
In the Wee Wolves section, new cinema for kids just gets more
exciting with a wide-ranging lineup of fascinating films to feed
your imagination! Don’t miss our three programs of short films for
the whole family, real gems from all over the world. After Le ballon vert, Porte
bonheur and
Papier de soi, this year the Wee Wolves film camp
presents Rencontre
du 3e âge, a film about intergenerational
dialogue. The project is a collective effort by Dr. Julien’s
children at risk, backed by a team of professionals. Also on the
lineup is the feature Émilie
Jolie by Francis Nielsen and Philippe Chatel
(France), based on the eponymous musical penned by Chatel, with
original songs performed by Françoise Hardy, Georges Brassens,
Julien Clerc and many more. For young English-speaking movie buffs,
we have The
Flying Machine by Martin Clapp, Geoff Lindsey and
Marek Skrobecki (Poland/UK), in which a flying machine leads us on
the trail of famous virtuoso Frédéric Chopin. The fantastic Tomboy by
Céline Sciamma (France) is essential viewing, a sensitive film
about the complex issues of childhood, starring a cast of
exceptional young actors.

FNC
Lab is a section for exploring the interactions between image and
sound through different platforms:

INTERACTIVE WORKS/WEB PROJECTS: Épopée (Rodrigue
Jean), Blabla (Vincent
Morisset), The Johnny Cash Project (Chris
Milk) and Robot
Heart Stories will be presented in competitive
selection.

LECTURES: Check out the editorial cycle Rinse, Repeat, Restore:
at a time when audiovisual archiving is in a state of flux, the FNC
takes stock of this complex and wide-ranging issue through films (Bill Morrison)
and a lecture at Concordia University by Mark Toscano

INSTALLATIONS/PERFORMANCES: discover Full Moon,
an unusual interactive work by Iregular (with graphic design
and illustration by Baillat
Cardell & fils) — a gigantic moon on the
promenade des Artistes in the Quartier des spectacles. In our
performances, Jürgen
Reble and
Thomas Köner (Germany) present Materia Obscura,
a dreamlike journey made up of 16-mm “chemograms”; Zapruder Filmmakersgroup
(Italy) bring us SPELL,
a performance in two parts: The
Hypnotist Dog (3D film) and Suite (a hyperamplified concert
for ping-pong table); and Optical
Machines (Netherlands) a Dutch duo playing a
mechanical audiovisual instrument.

FILMS: a selection of avant-garde experimental
shorts and features will be shown on the big screen, with the world
premiere of Seis
Mil Antennas by Johnny Ranger, a 360-degree
film screened at the Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT)
Satosphère.

FNC PRO
Where
professionals converge
FNC Pro has been distilled into three consecutive days (October 17, 18 and 19)
at the Agora
Hydro-Québec in UQÀM’s Cœur des sciences for a more
concentrated event conducive to discussions and meetings among
professionals from all areas of film and media. FNC Pro includes
lectures, round tables, panels, case studies, workshops, pitches
and networking cocktail parties.

EVENTS
Once again this year, Festival headquarters will host some very
festive events every night. On Friday, October 12, at 10:30 p.m.,
the 40th anniversary celebrations will kick off with a first night
in the realm of the wolf. Music by Why Alex, Why? and Vincent Lemieux will
get festivalgoers in the spirit of things and set the tone for ten
nights of special events. On October 13, we’re launching the
sophomore album In
a Fung Day T by the band Duchess Says,
and on the 14th, a group of First Nations kids invites us to check
out their first films during the major international launch of Wapikoni mobile.
Saturday the 15th, there will be a screening of shorts by the kids
from the LOVE
Project, followed by the first edition of Inside Brain,
a groundbreaking film series on the theme of mental illness,
accompanied by an excerpt from Maudite
folle!, the first novel by Varda Étienne, read by
Bénédicte Décary. Later in the evening, we present a film by
director Khoa
Lê inspired by the imagination of designer Denis Gagnon.
The evening concludes with a special event presented by Écorce Atelier créatif:
the Wolf Cubs
party with Mike
Simonetti, who heads up the Italians Do It Better
label.
The events continue throughout the week with the Montreal premiere
of the Jay
Reatard documentary Better Than Something; the 13th
edition of Sprint
For Your Script; an evening in the wilderness with
the National
Parks Project, featuring 52 artists who composed
and recorded pieces in parks across Canada; and the wonderful Nuit #1 by
director Anne Émond, screened during an evening set to music by
the group Claass,
which includes two members of We Are Wolves. And on Saturday,
October 22, we present the premiere of the feature Monsieur Lazhar
by Quebec filmmaker Philippe Falardeau. DJs Archibald Singleton,
Alix, Panton and Matteo Grondini will take
turns on the decks till late into the night to wrap up the ten nights
of the Festival.
Plus, a very special event will be held on October 13. Making
history of dance film, Ora
by Philippe Baylaucq uses 3D-Thermal imaging photography to merge
contemporary dance and daring cinematography. A unique sensory
experience that takes dance to a new level, Ora will screen as the
first part of a double bill with Wim Wenders’ Pina. Both Philippe Baylaucq and
Wim Wenders will be attendance.
