Sheffield Doc/Fest is delighted to announce a taster of this year’s film programme, which includes award-winning documentaries from around the world. The 15th festival will screen more than 100 films over the five days. Last year, Doc/Fest introduced several themed strands, which highlighted the current trends of documentary filmmaking. The success of the Green, Bent, Anti Doc, Sports and Music strands mean they will be heading for Doc/Fest audiences again this year, with the addition of Kink...
One of the highlights this summer will be the 12th annual Rhode Island International Film Festival, and to help spread the word, organizers reached out for some East Side star power to help. Literally. On Thursday, June 19, RIIFF hosted a reception at the Ladd Observatory on Hope Street to introduce the community to new members of their advisory board and this year's summer interns who hail from across the globe. Organized by Demetria Carr, RIIFF's Associate Producing Director, the event inclu...

"Shine a Light" in Eskişehir -- a Frank Exchange of Views and other films Alex Deleon emailed Al Milgom in Minneapolis as follows: Just came from back from seeing Scorcese's "Shine a Light" and all I can say is that it was UPLIFTING -- Great concert from which Scorcese thankfully stayed mostly out of the way of -- Ends with SATISFACTION but it was foot stompin' and body shakin' all the wa. Jagger is amazingly muscular and energetic for his age but Keith Richards looks pretty skinny and wast...
The 10th Anadolu University Eskishehir film festival wound up its ten day run on May 12 with no particular fanfare, just the usual 24 daily on and off campus screenings. Altogether local film fans were treated to over seventy films selected from all periods of film history from Chaplin silents, through early Hitchcock up to a wide selection of new festival films such as Scorcese’s Rolling Stones documentary “Shine a Light” which opened Berlin this year and “No Country for Old Men” a m...
İn Turkey (and in Arab countries as well) there is an entrenched tribal custom according to which if a female commits adultery, broadly defined as any sexual acivity outside of marriage at any age, it is the duty of the males of the family to kill her in order to preserve the honor and good name of her family or clan. This tried and true age-old custom is known as "Töre" in Turkey but just plain "murder" in most civilized countries. Fortunately this primitive blood-curdling tradition is n...
Eskişehir. "Zeynep's Eight Days" ("Eight Day Daze" would be more to the point) is a film which won a best actress award at Ankara for the yoemanlike work of actress Fadik Atasoy in March. This debut feature by Cemal Şan is a long sterile meditation on the alienation of lonely livıng in sterile modern high rise apartments in a faceless big city in which the main actress who is in nearly every scene is called upon to act like a zombie or cyborg throughout. The film follows heroine...

On Sunday, the awards were announced for the 17th Aspen Shortsfest. The entire list can be seen below. Except for the audience award given to COME BACK TO SUDAN, which shared the award with ONE BRIDGE TO THE NEXT, nothing was too surprising. I really liked the message of COME BACK TO SUDAN, but felt the filmmaking – especially from a story standpoint, lacked focus. More understandable, was the award to ONE BRIDGE TO THE NEXT. It’s presents us with Dr. Jim Withers, a street doctor who atten...

Got here yesterday afternoon and headed to the Wheeler Opera House for the first program of the festival. It blew me away. As filmmakers Sylvia Johnson and Ismet Ergun said in the Q&A which followed - "It's all about the storytelling". Those stories ranged from cinema-going kids in Turkey, to a murder in Inuit country, to the streets of Brazil, and to the rehab clinic at Walter Reed. The second program screened later the same night. It was not quite as strong as the first, ...
