ECU's Scott Hillier announces the line up of films in competition

user
Exhausted. Mental images of hundreds of films spiraling through tired minds. Eyes a-sting. Tremendously excited about the event to come. First of all I have to say a big congratulations to the 78 filmmakers who have made their way into ÉCU’s 2011 ‘Official Selection’. It was a hard, hard process this year – we were inundated with amazing films – and for those filmmakers that didn’t get in – please keep on going, the world needs great story tellers. Thanks also goes to my selection...

The Festival organization took an office at the M...

2011 My Sundance film festival

user
This is an overview of my 2011 Sundance experience  For Europeans, heading to a remote mining town now ski resort and festival headquarters in Park City, Utah, tucked away in the Wasatch mountains outside of Salt Lake City, it's no simple journey. It entails careful planning several months in advance, serious budgetary calculation to secure a bed in those expensive shared- condos, and blocking extra time to your return schedule as flipping time zones wrecks havoc with your metabolism a...

The 41st Forum: Cracks in the Facade

user
A surprisingly large number of films in the programme of the 41st Berlinale Forum revolve around family, relationships and identity. Although exploring the human psyche is the number one subject for independent filmmakers from the whole world, the majority of these films in this year's selection can also be read politically within the context of social change and political upheaval.   In this way, artist Kelvin K. Park's documentary Cheonggyecheon Medley places the threatened demolition of a tr...

Berlinale Panorama 2011 with Renowned Directors, Three Films on India and Many New Discoveries

user
Now that the programme is almost complete it can be said that in the aftermath of the financial crisis truly independent cinema is at an advantage. The themes of many first films are daring and hence inspiring, as seen in the work of Israeli filmmaker Michal Aviad who, set against the backdrop of the interminable Palestinian-Israeli conflict, has her protagonists work through traumas in Lo Roim Alaich (Invisible), or with French director Céline Sciamma whose Tomboy portrays the coming of age of...

Essential Filmmaking: An Interview With Legendary Polish Director Jerzy Skolimowski

Jerzy Skolimowski is a busy man these days. The Polish director's latest film Essential Killing made headlines this autumn when it won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and the film's lead, Vincent Gallo, took the prize for best actor. The film was released in Poland in October, and audiences have been filling cinemas to see what is admittedly a unique film in terms of story and style. In the following interview, Mr. Skolimowski discusses the origins of the film, the funding ...

The Angel Film Awards

user
The Angel Film Awards – Monaco International Film Festival 2010 2nd – 5th December 2010 The Angel Film Awards in Monaco– a glamorous three-day extravaganza, where the films in competition promote, unusually, peace and love – a refreshing antidote to the usual violent and gratuitous fodder thrown at us from Hollywood. Started eight years ago by Rosana Golden and Dean Bentley, specifically to showcase non-violent films, the Angel Film Awards may eschew violence but this is n...
