Besides the customary unveiling of new and upcoming talent from far and wide which is the hallmark of this festival, Karlovy 2012 provided such an extensive look at film history that these selections alone could have constituted an entire festival on their own. Among digitally restored new prints of landmark old films were Fellini's "La Strada, 1954, which among other things made burly actor Anthony Quinn into an arthouse icon, and Miloš Forman's "Fireman's Ball" (1967) the...

Once upon a time. Old magazines gently dance in the wind. A super-8 camera crawls over a wooden table while an old carpet flows in and out. Suddenly, a mouse. Then, a whole civilization running towards its inevitable destiny. Plastic waste has reached the point where not even the most distant beaches are safe.

Another exclusive guest coming from France on FEST2011 is indeed writer and author of a book about Stanley Kubrick and Editor of the most exclusive French film magazine ever “Le Positif”, a film critic, Michel Ciment. Ciment held a Master Class, moderated by the black wave old Yugoslav film Dušan Makavejev on the festival, because Ciment (as many others) is truly nostalgic for the times of the big Yugoslav cinema. And for those who do not know, Pavlovic, Djordjevic and Makavejev of the ...
My take on *SEASON OF THE WITCH
Nicolas Cage is one of my favourite actors. Even when he features in faltu
films like Bangkok Dangerous. Having starred in Dominic Sena's Gone in 60 Seconds,
he reteams with the director in a supernatural tale which has been released in
India in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
Set in medieval Europe, SEASON OF THE WITCH stars Cage as the Crusader knight
Behman with Ron Perlman, as the knight Felson for a comrade in arms in the fi...

ABSTRACT NOTIONS was made up of six shorts (in screening order):
THE OPERA SINGER [2010] dir Nadaav Soudry {2 mins} - This short is a satire of an opera singer giving her best performance whilst selling out. I found it funny and truthful, short and sweet. Soudry has managed to make a statement with a 2 minute short mainly mostly made up of a slow zoom of the title character's face.
FROG IN THE WELL [2010] dir Ken Ochiai {15 mins} - A man who just lost his mother, who ...

Based on the book by Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus, the film focuses on a small frightened child who desperately wishes to tell someone about what is going on at home, but doesn’t know who to talk to or what to do.
In awarding the Grand Prix to the film’s director, Anita Killi, the festival jury described Angry Man as a “beautifully made mixed media film” which...

The 20th Anniversary Cinequest Film Festival (CQFF20), Feb. 23 - March 7, 2010, celebrates the vision of Cinequest's founding artists and innovators: Mavericks.

In the past year, our country increased its national debt by $1.9 trillion, including $245 billion in bailout funds as part of a greater effort to create change. Conversely, Cinequest, a company that has stayed in the black since inception, spent less than $2 million to create change by empowering the artistic revolutionaries of our time: the Mavericks, those who astound, electrify, inspire, laugh, pioneer—and in turn create rippling effects throughout the world. The 20th Anniversary Cinequest...
BANGKOK ~ Oliver Stone said he’d seen the lies of the Reagan administration in the ‘eighties, and how the USA had intervened in 60 or 70 countries, but nothing had prepared him for the Bush years.
“This has been the worst decade of my life” Stone told reporters in Bangkok yesterday.
The film-maker, in Thailand to deliver a series of talks organised by the International Peace Foundation, said “Bush was the most dangerous president in history,” because of his policy on ...

The French New Wave – known as la nouvelle vague– was a celebration of youth, Paris and, above all, cinema. Many people don’t know that the term nouvelle vague was first used in 1957 to describe the new generation of French youth, emancipated 18 to 30 year olds who were free-thinking and keen to throw off the legacy of the Second World War. It was only following the success of François Truffaut’s Les...
There are not too many film masters whose works have influenced the length and the breadth of the "seventh art" who are still walking among us.
