Winter Film Awards


Winter Film Awards is an all-volunteer women and minority-run 501(c)3 organization founded in 2011 by NYC filmmakers and arts enthusiasts. It was built with the dream of making indie film more accessible to the public and providing driven, talented artists the opportunity to break through competitive barriers to establish meaningful careers in film.

Our Mission is to recognize excellence and diversity in cinema, with a special emphasis on showcasing women and minority filmmakers and to promote learning and artistic expression for people at all stages of their artistic careers.  Our focus is on nurturing emerging filmmakers from all genres from around the world, and helping them gain recognition and contacts to break into this difficult industry.

Our annual festival offers something for everyone, highlighting the dynamic range of talent and storytelling capabilities the independent filmmaking community has to offer.  We pride ourselves on our diverse collection of Festival selections, allowing our audience to enjoy films they normally wouldn’t think to seek out.

In addition to our annual Independent Film Festival, we host 4-6 events each year in New York City, including panel discussions, networking parties, a 48-Hour Film Challenge, a Comedy Competition, archival cartoon screenings and other fun film-related events.

Like many of the great film Festivals across the country and the world, WFA seeks to bring our audience compelling and unique content that inspires the viewers and honors the filmmakers. There are hundreds of film festivals in New York City; what makes us different is our intense focus on the variety of our films and helping new filmmakers reach what may be their first real audience.

WFA is a minority- and women-owned registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We work with all local NYC film schools, colleges, arts high schools and many cultural societies.

Winter Film Awards 2015 CALL FOR ENTRIES

WINTER FILM AWARDS is pleased to announce a CALL FOR ENTRIES for the 4th Annual Independent Film Festival, a celebration of independent film to be held February 25 – 28 2015 in New York City. Filmmakers from around the world will travel to NYC to attend the three full days of film screenings and industry networking after-parties culminating in a glittering awards ceremony to be held on February 28 in the luxurious Empire Room at Club 230 Fifth. 

WFA 2015 Festival Submission categories include Narrative Feature, Foreign Language, Short, Documentary, Animation, Music Video and Horror.  Outstanding work will be awarded for each category, along with Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, Best Original Score, Best Student Film, the WinterFEAR Horror Award in partnership with FearsMagazine, and the PERSPECTIVES Award for best depiction of the New York multi-cultural experience.  Submissions deadlines are as follows:  Early Bird Deadline – September 1 2014, Regular Deadline – November 1 2014, Late Deadline – December 1 2014. Entrants will be notified of final decisions by January 5 2014.

Steffanie Finn, WFA Executive Director says "At WFA, we seek fresh voices and alternate perspectives from creative emerging indie filmmakers from the entire world. We offer a truly exciting mixture of film genres, viewpoints and subjects in order to give our attendees the opportunity to see films they might never think to seek out otherwise."  For the 2014 Festival, 61 films from 20 countries were selected for screening, including 17 female directors and 9 student films.  Works of all genres, forms, and lengths are considered for Festival screening. 

Winter Film Awards is a (pending) non-profit 501(c)3 volunteer-run and operated organization which celebrates diversity of local and international film-making. Their focus is on showcasing emerging filmmakers from every age, ethnic, racial, religious, cultural, political and geographic perspective and providing a stepping stone for all filmmakers, from students with blossoming careers to established industry veterans, to screen their work in front of a large audience and gain recognition for their achievements.
