Leopoldo Soto sat with Selim Evci, director of Secret, which was selected at Montreal. 

Born in Istanbul in 1975, Turkish filmmaker Selim Evci studied at Maltepe University and took his master’s in film from Beykent University. He directed a documentary, Red, in 2001, and founded his own production company, Evci Films, in 2006. TWO LINES (2008), his fiction directorial debut, premiered at the Venice Festival and showed at several prominent international festivals. He followed with WINDS (2012), supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, which also showed at festivals worldwide.

Synopsis

Mahir, a famous musician with a personality to match, has been having a secret romantic relationship with his daughter’s friend Duru. Duru’s father Ali is honoured to have met Mahir, but he is a traditional, family-oriented man. The product of an old-school notion of what roles men and women should play in society. He takes his daughter to the gynaecologist regularly to assure himself that she’s a virgin and therefore marriageable. But conservatism doesn’t preclude hypocrisy: Ali has secrets of his own. Mahir and Duru drift apart just before Ali can learn about their relationship. But Duru is a spirited young woman with a mind of her own... “The search of one’s own nature in the secret areas one creates, the journeys to the profundity of one’s soul, the shame, the desire to hide, acquired in society through experienced behaviour patterns – and in this context they don’t judge but reflect social reflexes.” -- Selim Evci
