Creative Gate Industry @Tallinn

Development Centre of Creative Industries In collaboration with creative and service sector partners, Creative Gate is developing an international platform as a gateway to film and audiovisual industry, the central export marketing channel of which is the annual Industry@Tallinn, a part of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. At the information day, the companies and representative organisations in the field will be introduced to the platform’s potential and invited to join.

The idea behind the platform is to provide new growth and export opportunities for film industry and related creative industries like film production, post-production, film music, design, cast, short film and animation, through the international film industry. A series of exciting events will take place in November this year, but the main activities are planned to take place over the next two years. For example, Michael Pärt is curating the preparation of a catalogue of locations and interpreters suitable for recording film music in Estonia, which has never been done before. The goal is to attract foreign film music producers to record film music in Estonia, using local sound studios, churches, orchestras, and choirs. On 28 Nov, Uli Hanisch, an internationally renowned art director from Germany, who has created an artistic solution for dozens of films, including Cloud Atlas, The Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, will give a master class to local film artists. In co-operation with the Estonian Film Instituate, the online portal www.filmestonia.eu introducing the Estonian film industry to the international markets will be further developed.

On 28 Nov, the magnificent Black Nights Catwalk takes place in the blackbox of Tallinn Creative Hub, bringing together film music, fashion, and film art. An exhibition of costumes and props used in Estonian films, specially created for the event by the members of the Estonian Film Artists’ Union, is opened. More information on the activities and membership of the development centre is available at the website www.creativegate.ee

The partners of the project are Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University, ShortEst Estonian Short Film Centre, Estonian Film Institute, Estonian Fashion Brands’ Association, Estonian Film Industry Export Union, Estonian Film Art Department and Film Artists’ Union. The project is supported in the amount of 300 000 EUR by the European Regional Development Fund, Max Factor, Flanders and German film centres.

About Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

Started in 1997, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival has grown into one of the biggest film festivals in Northern Europe and busiest regional industry platforms, hosting more than 1000 guests and industry delegates and over 160 journalists. The festival screens around 250 features and more than 300 shorts and animations and sees an attendance of 80 000 people annually. In 2017 the festival was covered in 71 languages with a potential global media audience of over 1.1 billion people.

As of 2014 the festival holds the FIAPF accreditation for holding an international competition programme which puts the festival into the so- called A-category of film festivals, alongside other 14 festivals in the world (including Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, Karlovy Vary, San Sebastian, Shanghai, Tokyo etc).

Black Nights has an umbrella structure with two sub-festivals PÖFF Shorts and youth and children's film festival Just Film taking place concurrently with the main festival,
two off-season festivals - Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival and Tartu Love Film Festival - and a fully-fledged film industry platform Industry@Tallinn, organised jointly with the Baltic Event Co-production market.
